With Haiti going down the pipe, what's the situation in PR? Is there a worrisome gang presence there? Are there going to be kidnappings of people by criminal gangs, warfare among the gangs, assassinations of political candidates? They're going to have to put a tall, armed-guarded, razor-barbed, floodlit, canine patrolled fence around Haiti to keep all that poison from leaking out and spoiling one of the most beautiful parts of the world. I went to the Dominican Republic once on vacation. Long story. What an eye-opener! We stayed in an all-inclusive resort near Cofresi. Beautiful place. Went on a scuba dive outing, and the bus picked up other people at the resorts in the area. Every single resort was guarded by an army toting automatic weapons, shotguns, sidearms and dogs. With Haiti as a neighbor, I can see why they are building a fence on the border.
Interesting you mention CofresÃ. That place only has around three resorts all belonging to the same company. Most of the other resorts in Puerto Plata aren’t visible from the street and nowhere near CofresÃ. One of my pet peeves of the place is the beach, which isn’t what people imagine a Caribbean beach is suppose to look like. The sand is not even white.
The guards situation has nothing to do with Haiti or the current situation there. Since you don’t give a date of your trip and the gang situation in Haiti is a recent creation (within this decade), my assumption is that if you went to Cofresà it was before the gang situation appeared in Haiti.
This is the Cofresà you referred to, right? The quality of the beach can be seen at 1:00. It’s the ugliest beach with resorts in the DR. How can anyone go to Cofresà and not be impacted by the quality of the beach to not say anything about it? The main reason to stay in a beach resort is the beach!
If the Haiti situation has nothing to do with the DR tourism industry (btw, currently the most visited place in the Caribbean), why would it be an issue in Puerto Rico? Not even Jamaica and Cuba, which are the other two neighbors of Haiti and in fact closer than PR, have any relation to the situation in that country. All those places speaks different languages and none of them are the languages of Haiti. That in itself should let you know how much influence comes from there.
Btw, there is a Cofresà in PR too. Both are named after the same pirate!

more like the US, don't be stupid, buy drugs in the projects, take pictures of drug dealers in la perla because a music video was shot there, and you'll be fine. use common sense, treat people with respect, and you can go anywhere you'd want to on the island on your own.
Saw the Haitian Gangster No. 1 on YouTube bragging about how he will destroy any armed forced sent to root him out of Haiti, bar none. He dared anyone to try to kill or arrest him.
In the last few years, Puerto Ricans have been targeted in massive identity theft schemes. Their birth certificates kept unsecured in schools or churches were stolen and sold for as much as $6,000 on the black market and used for illegal immigration and other frauds.
One such scheme was to buy cars using these stolen identities. Between October 2017 and September 2020, fraudsters used stolen identity information of Puerto Ricans to acquire 47 cars totaling about $2 million.

You know there's a problem when non-natives outnumber natives in prison. The question in P.R. shouldn't be nationality but social class.
Do they though? I thought that the vast majority were Puerto Rican?
Are they Dominican/Haitian?
