The madness of the severe weather season this spring 2011 seems bent on dishing out as much fear and pain as possible:

Reports are coming in that Springfield, MA, a city of over a 100,000 people – had a tornado pass right over the interstate highway a few hours ago and go through the edge of downtown. So far there has been one confermined fatality, and 300 have been reported injured. Returns and ABC News have been reporting many streets are impassable in central Massachusetts, and search and rescue teams are still making their way to the area hit. I also saw a report that Mercy Hospital might have been hit. Reportedly the tornado started in Westfield and moved to W. Spfld, Springfield, East Longmeadow.

One of the strangest videos I've ever seen. Tornado crossing the Connecticut River heading east toward the Atlantic Ocean:

Just an update from CNN I just saw:

4 are now known dead, 300 + injuries.

This brings the death toll from tornadoes this year to 488 in the USA.

Wow. What is with tornadoes hitting urban/populated areas this year? They almost always form in the middle of nowhere.

…and that’s the big issue it seems – when tornadoes hit populated areas, even modest tornadoes can do a lot of damage. Meto Springfield, MA has a population of 450,000. From what I have seen the damage trail goes on for 20 miles. Early estimates are that 10,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Here is West Springfield, the middle of the vid shows how wide spread damage is:
