I'm proposing a Texas Trivia game for the forum. We did this in the Wyoming forum (my home state) and it was a lot of fun and very educational. https://www.city-data.com/forum/wyomi...a-renamed.html It went on for 191 pages before interest died out.

Rules: The Texas Trivia question should be about Texas history, people, places, facts, activities or events, etc. The answer should be something that can be found on-line so every one has a chance at finding it if they search. i.e. it should not be something so obscure that it can only be found in a rare book that very few people have access to.

One question at a time. One person asks a question. Whoever first answers it correctly gets to ask the next question. Answers should be substantiated with a link to a web site or two that documents it. The person asking the question should confirm if the answer is correct. If no one seems to be able to find the correct answer after a day or so the person who asked the question can provide hints or provide the answer with substantiation and then ask a new question.

Here is the first question: Where does the name Texas come from and what does it mean?

Tip: when searching for an answer, keep in mind what future questions you might want to ask. You can find lots of interesting new questions while searching for an answer.

Default Assuming I am right....

Assuming (and we all know what they about THAT!) concerning the origins of the term "Texas"...and I get to ask the next question?

Well, here it is:

What are the Six Flags Over Texas?

Don't Google. Lets play the honor system here and go from personal knowledge and memory:

Now then, the reason I leapt to ask this question is because I will not be around to see the answer until I can check the forum out again. It is Sunday evening, and I have to go to work tomorow. Five-thirty is hell on an old man like me!

Y'all have a great week and see everyone later!

P.S. Again, great thread topic!

You are correct, your turn. I expected that you would like this game.

Googling to find an answer is perfectly fine. The object is to have fun while learning new things about this great state. Not every answer will be as easy as that first one.

Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Texas (i /ˈtɛksəs/) is the second-largest U.S. state by both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, the word being "Tejas" was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas.[7]

Texas State Name Origin
Texas is from the Caddo Indian word "teyshas" (meaning "friends" or "allies"). In the 1540s Spanish explorers took this to be a tribal name, recording it as Teyas or Tejas. It came eventually to mean an area north of the Rio Grande and east of New Mexico. The alliance concept is also incorporated into the state motto, which is simply "Friendship."

TEXAS, ORIGIN OF NAME | The Handbook of Texas Online| Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)
TEXAS, ORIGIN OF NAME. The word texas (tejas, tayshas, texias, thecas?, techan, teysas, techas?) had wide usage among the Indians of East Texas even before the coming of the Spanish, whose various transcriptions and interpretations gave rise to many theories about the meaning. The usual meaning was "friends," although the Hasinais applied the word to many groups-including Caddoan-to mean "allies." The Hasinais probably did not apply the name to themselves as a local group name; they did use the term, however, as a form of greeting: "Hello, friend." How and when the name Texas first reached the Spanish is uncertain, but the notion of a "great kingdom of Texas," associated with a "Gran Quivira" (see QUIVIRA) had spread in New Spain before the expedition of Alonso De León and Damián Massanet in 1689. Massanet reported meeting Indians who proclaimed themselves thecas, or "friends," as he understood it, and on meeting the chief of the Nabedaches (one of the Hasinai tribes) mistakenly referred to him as the "governor" of a "great kingdom of the Texas."

Ah, the Confederate States! You could have helped me out on that one Reb!

Fun game CptnRn!
