We are about one to two years out from retiring. Our property near Orlando is on the market. When it sells we retire. We are thinking near Tallahassee. Everything we have heard is that its like it was here 30 years ago, without all the tourists....We are looking from around Madison or Monticello to DeFuniak Springs. Bare land or land with an old Florida house on it to restore. Our goal is a small town within reasonable driving distance of Tallahassee. How close or how far should we consider? What area/town would you recommend? North, South, East or West of Tallahassee? We like rural, but not remote. As older folks some shopping and a hospital nearby are a plus. Where do you live and would you recommend it to another person?

I've always liked Marianna, though Hurricane Michael in 2018 changed it a lot.

DeFuniak Springs is very nice - possibly the nicest small town in the Panhandle - but it's quite a drive from Tallahassee.

The areas immediately west of Tallahassee are generally not as nice as the areas immediately east of it, though there are exceptions. I'd look in Jefferson County/Monticello or Havana.

I would look at Wakulla and Jefferson Counties. Madison is ok too and a nice location to travel to Tallahassee, Lake City, and Valdosta. Gadsden County is a poorly managed county and a little too rough around the edges in my opinion.

We are thinking the same thing and are also looking in the Northwest Florida area! We had to take Texas off the retirement list since the problems and cost of illegal immigration are just overwhelming the state in spite of the attempts of its good governor.

Our rule of thumb is a good grocery within 15 minutes, a decent hospital within 30 minutes and an adequate airport within an hour! Please update if you find a spot. We could be neighbors!

Would you consider Publix as a "good grocery", or do you mean something more specialty/high end?

Publix would be fine so long as it includes the regular grocery offerings of a deli, meat and seafood counters, etc. We also love Whole Foods, Freshmarket and Traders Joes but those can be more irregular in visits.

Dollar Generals would NOT qualify!

For character and community it would be hard to beat Monticello. Otherwise I would recommend "across the border" in the similarly nice town of Thomasville, about 30 min from Tallahassee and unlike Monticello has its own Publix!

Default We continue to look......

We got our daughter moved into her apartment in Tallahassee as FSU this weekend. I am planning to start "Search and Discover" weekends in the near future. My wife is inclined towards Monticello. I am inclined to more rural areas maybe near Monticello. As some have noted, shopping you can drive to is nice. I'm sure there is a place for us somewhere up there between Quincy and Madison. Got to start looking!
