Hi folks! So. I have cancer. And I have family in South Dakota, I was born in Minnesota and have family there as well.
Im looking in the Sioux Falls area, anyone know how the cancer treatment is there? Is the cost of living as low as it looks? Any hidden gotchas besides winter?
The healthcare overall in Sioux Falls is excellent. When it comes to treatments for cancer let me re-direct you to the Prairie Center at Avera Mc Kennan.
My wife has worked at AND with both hospitals for over 40 years with several different jobs. The cancer center at Avera is the only place she would go if we were hit with that awful thing.
The cost of living, especially for retired people, is very low here when compared to the nation as a whole.
I would recommend Sioux Falls or a close suburb. If you are looking outside of SF, I'd recommend Dell Rapids, Brandon, or Tea. They're towns with plenty of well planned commercial where you can get most everything that you need without always having to go into Sioux Falls all the time. Stand alone towns that aren't just a residential suburb of Sioux Falls.
SF has remarkably great restaurants and stores, since people from surrounding areas come to that city to have fun and shop.
Tourism doesn't seem like a huge thing in South Dakota but it is very present. Be warned, the times, before, during and after Sturgis Motorcycle Rally are insane. The whole region gets swamped.
Thanks! Im retired on Social security under the compassionate care act so I have a reasonable enough income, But where I live...well. rents 2,200 a month here for a small 2 bedroom apartment in a 6 story complex. And I have family in Sioux Falls, and in Minnesota. So I appreciate all the info I can get, and the info on cancer care is truly helpful. Thanks all!

You can rent a whole house here for much less than that.
Also, South Dakota doesn't tax your Social Security.
