Curiously enough, I watched the 1978 final the other day. The Argentines won that game before it even kicked off, they delayed the kickoff and then complained about van der Kerkhof's cast on his wrist. The Netherlands were furious before a ball was kicked, but Kempes, what a player!

Sad to hear of Menotti's passing, he was a curiously left-wing figure in charge of Argentina during the military junta.

That's right. He even declared himself to be a communist. Clearly, his status as a national team coach worked in his favor. For much less were there people who went on to swell the list of disappeared. I don't know what would have happened if the team failed. According to the expectations of the time, any position other than champion would have been classified as a failure. And the members of the military junta were very interested in the tournament.
