Hi all:
Does anyone remember the murder trial back around 1960 or 1961 in which the murder was committed and the body was dropped off near the Median Lake dam. I went to the trial and got to hear all the gory details. My girlfriend lived near Pooky's lounge on Bandera Rd. and I believe there was a tie to Pooky's. Maybe it was planned there. They caught the culprits and were tried in Big Red Court House. Most of the details slip my mind now but I remember that the body of a man was dumped a few hundred yards from the dam near where the store or lounge by the dam was located.

Anyone else with details?

By the way, my first job was in 1957 at the Handy Andy #2 at Bandera and Woodlawn. I was paid 35 cents an hour to bag groceries. A couple of years later I was at HEB and made a whopping $1.00 and hour. In todays terms that is about 4 cigarettes an hour. Or in Handy Andy terms, 1 and 1/3 cigarettes per hour.

I believe it closed in 1986. That JC Penney store was one of the original tenants at Terrell Plaza.

I don't recall ever seeing any vintage pictures of that store, but I would say it changed very little between the time it opened in the 1950s and when it closed.

I remember going to Terrell Plaza right after it opened. It was across town from where we lived, but it was new. It predated the malls by a year or so. I think we made one or two trips to it in the 50's. It seems like it opened in 1957 or 1958. It was very similar to the shopping center they built on Fred Rd. Same owner?

It's hodge-podge time so away we go ... Canyon Dam took a while to fill due to several dry years for the upper Guadalupe River, lots of deep canyons and a large surface area. I once had a copy of the archaeology report and it was full of pre-historic indian sites but also a number of historic villages, farms, cemeteries, etc. from Anglo pioneer days.
Rattlesnake bites can kill as our family learned in the 1930s when an aunt was bitten on her way into the chicken coop on Edwards family farm near Pipe Creek. I still have the newspaper clippings telling of the incident then a day later telling it again and adding that the woman died of the bite by a large rattler on her foot. Must have been before anti-venom was developed.
Many thanx are due to Gregg Eckhardt for the Medina Dam archival fotos from his fabulous Edwards Aquifer website. Check it out but beware it can really pull you in as it goes on and on and on but it's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon since it's full info, old postcards, maps, science, history, stories, etc.
Wow, what a beautiful Sportster and in classic black too. All we ever had was a 1958 Cushman Eagle that my brother and I ran the hell out of for a couple years until he broke its back trying to be Evil Kneivel!

Are you sure it wasn't 1976? Because that is when the big Windsor Park store opened.

Yes MUD Pardon me but is the Highlander better or worse than the Eagle? The guy who lives next to me has one of them and usually goes riding on Saturday or Sunday Morning. Can you tell me if you know how to tell them apart? I would just like to impress him with my knowlege if I could. I guess you should be insulted but it doesn't hurt to ask. Did you ever work for Manpower and go to Tacna Arizona in the late seventies?
