Hi guys,

I am from Laredo Texas, but I have studied all my life in Mexico. I came from two different Universities in Monterrey(Mx) for the past 6 years, and now I'll continue studying Psychology at Texas.

I first want to finish basics in a Community College and then transfer. My mental issue is don't know if should finish my Associate's at San Antonio and then transfer to San Marcos or viseversa, or study both in the same city.

Recommendations/opinions, please. I'll appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance, blessings.

Question. Are you comparing the cities as places to live? Or are you asking for a comparison between two educational institutions? I couldn’t quite tell. Thanks.

If you're asking about a comparison between "Texas State at San Marcos" versus UT San Antonio, I think there's no comparison - UTSA is far more highly regarded. San Marcos State has a reputation as a major party school.

That may have been true for the 80's and 90's but when SWT became Texas State University in 2003 or so...it seemed to also lose the party school reputation as well.

Never heard people call it "San Marcos State" or "Texas State at San Marcos". That school doesn't seem like it can settle on a name.

Personally, I'd opt for UTSA. Texas State (or whatever they call themselves this year) still doesn't have a great reputation IMO. More importantly, you'll find better networking opportunities at UTSA for the future.

I apologize, I decided I want to study my Associates and Degree at the same city.
So my question is in which city to study them (basics and major). Which city to study?
I'm comparing the cities as places to study.

If you are doing both in the same city, then San Antonio hands down. There are way more many community colleges and universities in San Antonio compared to San Marcos.

For universities, you have UTSA as txredneck pointed out. There is also Texas A&M San Antonio, University of Incarnate World, Our Lady of the Lake University, Trinity University$$$.

Can you visit each place for a few days?

One of the best predictors of students completing a degree is if they feel comfortable where they live. Hard to tell about that until you spend some time in each place.

One of our nephews got his B.S. at Texas State. He enjoyed the laid back pace of San Marcos, breweries and so forth, and would drive an hour so to Austin for concerts, and such. As an undergraduate at Texas State, he was working in a lab with nanoparticles. He was accepted by several PharmD programs, and compiled one at UNC in Asheville, a town he also enjoyed.

Good for you for looking at the bigger picture here.

Sorry, got a bit confused. It's Southwest Texas State. Not a selective institution, let's just leave it at that.

Why not just register at a four year school and get the whole thing done in one fell swoop? Associate's degrees are basically worthless anyway.
