I recommend just taking a stroll through the Gateway, even if you aren't interested in buying anything. It's an outdoor mall and even just walking through it is a nice experience. TRAX is right there and it makes Downtown very accessible if you don't feel like walking. Apparently, Temple Square is the 15th most visited attraction in the country so I guess it's worth a look.

I will be using public transportation. Please provide some recommendations on sights to see and an eatery or two while in SLC for 12 hours.

Thanks!

Doubt you can really get there w/ public transportation.

To the OP, for eateries if you're looking for a really good pizza place I recommend Settebello, they have really authentic Italian pizza with a wood-burning oven and whatnot, just don't go there for dinner, the wait can be quite long. It's on 2nd West between 2nd and 3rd South.

Pioneer food is comfort food.....the simple fare, meat and potates that you'd get at your moms house....it's actually pretty good. After a couple of days on the road eating fast food, the Lion house is a much welcome treat.

Thanks so much for these recommendations. Will likely steer clear of the shopping-themed suggestions as I would choose dental work over shopping any day. Little Cottonwood Canyon not accessible by public transportation? Any other buena vistas that might be?

We're moving to SLC on Thursday and one of the first things I'll be going to is this UMFA: Utah Museum of Fine Arts - worth seeing if you like art.

Good idea weasy, and there is a Trax line up to the campus, so that would be easy to get to.
