Is Richmond an often overlooked city for 'hip', 'density', 'walkable' and other traits that hipsters would look for?

It seems we often hear of cities like Portland Oregon. These days, Pittsburgh, is even getting recognized. The general theme is that they have some density, more walkable, and hipster types can enjoy urban amenities, etc. While some hit the big cities like Brooklyn NY, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.

Others seem to be attracted to the mid-size for affordability. Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Austin, Pittsburgh, Louisville and some others come to mind.

But, Richmond seems like it would have the right ingredients, but under the radar? Or is there actually hipster presense, just doesn't seem to be getting the national attention? Or do the college students around the Fan, kind of always have that element, but most people associate that with the college, rather than post-college types moving in?

Richmond has a ton of hipsters. More and more gets compared to Portland, Austin, Pittsburgh, etc.

Richmond is overrun with hipsters, hippies, and granolas. Reason #1 why I've been trying to several years to leave.

I didn't think it was overlooked - just on a smaller scale than places like Portland and Austin.

Some of the key ingredients for hipster success can be found in Richmond: large university with strong arts program (VCU); great architecture (expensive rowhouses in the Fan blending into a more affordable, semi-rundown industrial areas to the east); and a lower cost of living than other big cities sometimes considered as alternatives (DC, Atlanta).

The downsides from a hipster perspective is that it's grittier/not all SWPL, and the weather can be brutal during the summer. But the Fan and Carytown together pack more hipster punch than all of DC combined.

Oh gosh... I wish the hipsters would take their unemployed, lifestyle sponsored by their parents even when they turn 30, pseudo-vegan, no daily bathing dirty asses back to their respective flyover states....

^ignore him

Richmond would be nothing without the hipsters and transient 30-something yuppies. There are still a lot of natives and I think I can go ahead and say that the clear majority of them like the direction that Richmond is going and welcomes anyone who wishes to join this fine city.

Hipsters are a bit obnoxious, but I agree. They have done wonders for the food, art, and culture scenes in Richmond, and for that I say keep riding that tall bike!
