If off-street parking is available, an undergraduate student can avoid registering their vehicle in Mass or RI. In Mass., graduate students are treated as part of the workforce and are expected to register their vehicle in state. I'm not sure about RI. Anyone know?

Hollytree, thanks. I don't see any distinction between undergraduate students and graduate students on the DMV website, which is different from the way Massachusetts runs things. This info should help the OP.
Thank you, all! She's bound and determined to have a car with her in Medford and Providence. Myself, for six months, I would forget about it and stick with public transportation. Problem is, while living in Medford the last year and a half, all her housemates have vehicles. And she misses having one. But I told her that they're also from the East coast.
