I do think for the most part it's true. However, the moderate size of the metro area allows Reno to keep some of it's charm...if the city continues to grow there will come a point where these small shops won't be able to survive and it becomes just another big city. But for now, it's pretty ideal.

The area does need to improve the restaurants. Guess I'm spoiled, but most of the ethnic food here is not that great. I would expect that to improve over time.

And I notice a Portland influence in the gentrifying downtown areas. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, I'm not that thrilled about Downtown Portland, I hope the good features of Portland can be kept...

Can't really beat the weather and the views...

What do you mean when you say a "portland influence"? The changes made to downtown? Do you mean Portland went through the same experience and you were not happy with the change?

Several Portland based businesses (eateries) have opened branches south of Downtown. I ate at a couple of them. My wife lived in the Portland area for a while and we noticed the Portland vibe (younger people, slightly "grunge") at those places.

IMHO, I felt the people of Portland were different. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it, but when I asked another out of stater (Seattle) he said "...they lack accountability". I agreed. The people I knew from there were flaky, even the older people. I saw a few people who looked like they were from Portland walking around the neighborhood around downtown, perhaps they lived in the area (OK, I am starting to stereotype a bit).

I don't know how much will carry over into Reno. I could see some people getting priced out of Portland and moving here. Nice weather, cool in the winter for winter sports, not as hot as much of California...

We'll see...

Reno's always kind of had more of a "crunchy" Pacific Northwest vibe (even going back to the 1980s), to me, anyways. Maybe that's what you're picking up or sensing?

Reno takes its cultural cues from San Francisco, Portland, Ashland, etc., while Las Vegas takes more of its cultural cues from L.A., San Diego and Orange County.

There's a reason the founders of Burning Man chose the desert out by Reno to hold that festival. Same reason the founders of Electric Daisy Carnival moved that venue from L.A. to Las Vegas.
