When I married my wife, she came equipped with a little dog - practically perfect Penny. Nice little gal.
A few years later we rescued an abused cat, Mister T. He and Penny got along well, not like you'd see on youtube but he'd groom her some and they would lie in the sunbeam together. Seemed to be good pals.

Some time later Penny died and we shortly after got another dog - a not so perfect one but one that we love totally. She and the cat tolerate each other other but that was about it. After we got the new dog, we would occasionally hear a bark or yelp at the back door and when we went to check to see if perhaps new dog was left out there was nothing there. We both heard it and if we were together both reacted at the same time. Often we'd check the back to ensure we didn't leave the new dog out, that's how plain the bark was. We called it our ghost dog. It wasn't real often, maybe a month or two between. Then about 3 months ago I remarked that we hadn't heard it in quite a while, like in a year maybe so figured it was over.

Mr. T was pretty cool and as part of the morning routine I'd let the dog out, give her a treat and let her back in. Mr. T and I would sit on the screened porch and he would nibble at his breakfast and watch the birds, squirrels and rabbits while I caught up with C-D.

Monday Mr. T passed away and we are all (even new dog) pretty sad. Then Wednesday, I was on the porch missing my buddy and I heard a short bark. I though the new dog wanted out so I opened the door and she wasn't there. Went to the kitchen to see if she wanted to eat, not there. Went to the pantry where her treats are, not there. Found her back in bed sleeping.

So we believe it was Penny, welcoming Mr. T as he crossed the bridge. I sincerely doubt we'll ever hear the bark again as our ghost dog is again with her buddy.

Bless your sweet Penny and Mr. T. They certainly form alliances in life, so it makes sense they would welcome one another as they cross over. Your sweet ghost dog is with her buddy.
