Woke up the other morning to find my 11 year old cavalier king charles spaniel had passed away, he had been suffering with an advanced heart Murmur and had been responding well on his medication. We found him tucked away between the radiator and chair with his eyes still slightly open and a small pool of reddish liquid coming from his mouth. I just can’t stop thinking about what his final moments would have been like, was he in pain? Was he awake or did he pass peacefully in his sleep? Did he know he was going to die that night? We normally stay up with him, but that one night we didn’t, I feel so guilty.

Our cat and dog are both in their elderly teens. The dog is a 25 lb mutt. That cat is mostly if not solely a Maine C00N. We are now spending a couple of thousand a year keeping them going. But both are still enjoying life. I will be sad if my 3AM visitor should depart. I think my body expects him.

So our condolences. We continuously dread the same thing.

Oh, I am so sorry! He passed away peacefully, please don't worry or blame yourself for not being there. You were with him every other night. I have read that before our pets pass away many times they will go to a quiet place, separate from family members. That's what I thought of when you said your dog was tucked away between the radiator and chair. Our pug had gone into a closet in which the door was partially open. We found him there just before he had a grand mal seizure and died. He didn't even realize we were there, and if we hadn't happened to be a few feet away when he had the seizure, he would have been alone when he died.

It was devastating to us, but we know we will see him again. That is the only way we got through it, by believing he is in heaven with all of God's creatures (people included, of course!).

I will say a prayer for you so that you will feel peace and comfort knowing your little King Charles is where he will never feel pain and where he will joyously welcome you when your turn comes (as it must for all of us).
