Well, after having three very busy days at work (after getting home from Vegas, Baby!) I am off for the day so that I can sit back and enjoy the Pro Bowl Game.
Now what I m hoping is that next year, we can coordinate our Vegas dates with the Pro Bowl weekend so that we can be there in person. I realize that I am one of the few cats left who looks forward to this game and maybe the only cat on here who enjoys it as much as a bowl of catnip, but I think it would be fun to be there in person.
I talked to my friend while we were in Vegas, the Lifelong Cowboys fan who met up with us there. He says that he does not think the game was ever rough, but I found a video or two of the 70s games showing some pretty solid hits.
Back in the 80s I think it was Montana and a few others who refused to play due to the injury risk. Now I know the games were rigged by this time, but so was Rasslemania I, remember?
The last few years, I suggested that they go to a flag football game due to the need to maintain safety and Goodell called me and said that they are taking that direction.
I was also trying to find a 1970s TV Special from a Thursday or Friday night which introduced all the players and had skits and music, kind of like a variety show, celebrating the Pro Bowl Status, but I have not been able to find it yet.
What I think would be good would be to have a gameshow night on the week before, having the ALL Pro Players on Jeopardy, Wheel of Misfortune, Match game, etc it would be fun to see Pete Carroll, Fat Mike McCarthy and Tom Brady compete on "Coaches Night" of wheel of Fortune.
So, for the one or two of you who will join me in watching it, enjoy, for those who don't want to, well, more for me then.......
I think turning the Pro Bowl into a flag football game was a brilliant idea. There were still a lot of people in the audience watching and everyone seemed to be having a good time. This is the one "fun" game in the NFL season because it didn't really mean anything, just an opportunity for top players to compete but still relax and have fun in a tropical location at the same time with each other before the season ended. It made perfect sense to make it a non-violent engagement.
Pro Bowl is not my cup of tea. Must have been the mid 90's last time I watched one but Frank Ragnow claims to like the format changes in an interview with a Lions reporter.
It is more of a skills competition nowadays... look at this year, it was FLAG football. Lol. Being named to the Pro Bowl does not mean as much now as it used to decades ago.

Many opt out because of "injury". Mainly, they just don't want to play.

You are correct. It is not the honor that it was decades ago.
