Keep in mind that this is likely going to be a temporary location, and it should be. An arena with 5,000 seats is paltry for a pro sports team. Although still not the best location, I certainly prefer this new site over Cottonville ... I mean Glendale. Westgate was a poor choice from the very start, and the area still hasn't come anywhere close to reaching its full potential nearly 20 years after ground was broken.

Not likely. It is a temporary location. The deal itself is temporary. From the e-mail sent to STH's.

"The new agreement means the Coyotes will be playing in the ASU Arena through at least the 2024-25 NHL season with an option to extend another year through the 2025-26 season."

It's Tempe or bust.

I don't know...the last Yotes game I was at MAY have filled 5000 seats. Maybe a more "intimate setting" is warranted with their attendance. Maybe that will change if they are in Tempe...Westgate is a HAUL for fans in the East Valley. If I hadn't been meeting clients for that last game I probably wouldn't have gone either.

It might not save the club but being able to use the train is a big deal.

It'll be packed houses and a sold out arena in the team's PR info from now on. This seems like a desperation move - no where else to go. It will not generate the revenue or the fan base needed to be a competitive team. I say they cut and run to another city (not in AZ) as soon as they can sucker one into building them an arena.

Taxpayers have been fleeced for billions of dollars for sports arenas, with the premise that these boondoggles help the local economy.

I lived in the Detroit area for 24 years.

Hockey fans will drive two + hours one way to watch the Red Wings lose.

In the snow.

How long were the Coyotes even at Westgate? 18 years? How long were they there before there was talk of them leaving? 10 years? If that? (Wasn't one scenario a few years ago that they'd move to an arena on a reservation in the far east Valley?)
I was skeptical that Phoenix could support an NHL team (and rightly so, obviously), but I loved the Phoenix Coyotes, especially in the early years, (Roenick,Tkachuk, Tocchet, Numminen et al...They were awesome to watch back in the day!)
But honestly, how many times can a team of their caliber keep expecting the public to pay to build them a new arena? They've never won a Cup, and have only won two playoff series the entire time they've been in Phoenix. Sounds like they've been bleeding money for years.
Does this team really have a future in Arizona?

Yeah, but at least the Wings have hope. Unlike the Yotes, who can be fun to watch, but are pretty much hopeless.

Coyotes to Tempe?

Does that mean there'll be regular ACME truck deliveries?

Will the roadrunner population need to be on their toes?

(If none of this makes any sense, then you're too young to be in Arizona!)
