Whiting is a very small town where it seems like "any news is big news"; however, being home to BP as well of significant redevelopment projects, I think it should have its own thread.

And here is what I think is a great start for it: Whiting breaks ground on upscale apartments

Now, I know most people remain concerned when they hear "upscale rentals" because as we all know, many rentals don't stay upscale for very long (as clearly seen in Griffith, Merrillville, and parts of Crown Point).

However, the renderings of this project which is mixed-use looks truly upscale.

Here is a closer look: Vavrek Architects Inc. - Project Portfolio

Funny, I was thinking to start the same thread after reading about this in the NWI Times. Always thought Whiting had lots of potential for rejuvenation. Great news.

It has been a while since there was a post here and a lot of developments have been going on in Whiting. The City Place apartments and first-foot retail has been successful. People thought that folks wouldn't go for the high rents but they sure did! I think Whiting will be wildly successful in years to come. It is a relatively safe area, decent enough schools, a close-knit and loyal population, and it is a small city that is manageable. I know that some people do not like the fact that the city is trying to reduce the single-family housing stock in favor of multi-family housing. However the mayor is smart. The affordable multi-family housing projects that are proposed are strictly for seniors. Other projects are on the higher-end side of things that would cater to folks working in the refinery and contract workers whom can afford the rent anyway.

Developers take chance on Whiting
