How is the weather in this area in the middle of May ? We're thinking of visiting the park then. Where's a good place to stay overnite ?

Thanks

Nice...Medora still pretty sleepy in mid May. If you're camping, could consider that. Otherwise, you're probably looking at staying in Dickinson which has the usual low to mid-range chains (Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, Best Western, etc.) that are on par with most larger towns/cities in ND (mainly Fargo that has a bit more diversified hotels, and Bismarck to a lesser extent). You can look at a few hotel options in Medora, but I'm guessing any hotel is at least $250-$350 a night. Dickinson will be sub-$100 most likely. I'd recommend considering stopping for a day or two in Bismarck as well (seeing the ND Heritage Center which is pretty cool, possibly the zoo, and there are some other things worthwhile seeing in Bismarck depending on what your interest are (Fort Abraham Lincoln is one that enters my mind immediately). Bismarck is probably the nicest city in ND from a tourist perspective (Fargo has more stuff overall for sure, but it doesn't give the same visitor/tourist friendly vibe IMO). We generally stop one night in Bismarck when going to TDNP.

Weather is nice if perhaps some chance of it being cool. Avg high is around 70, avg low around 40 in mid may but there is a lot of variation (could be low 50s in day, could be 85+ in day but neither of these are hugely likely in May). Bismarck weather pretty similar to Medora. Generally I'd say going to Teddy Roosevelt National park is pretty safe weatherwise from May through September (April and October can be decent too, but wouldn't necessarily recommend counting on it unless you're within a relatively short day's drive).

Thank you. We went to Balands N.P. years ago and that was a great trip. How long of a drive is it from Dickinson to the park ?

You can stay in Medora or Dickinson. The weather is usually pretty mild. A little early for baby animals but still a good time.

"How long of a drive is it from Dickinson to the park ?"

It's probably about 4 hours from Dickinson down to Badlands NP, say down to the town of Wall. But there's also a lot of traffic during the peak summer season. Definitely would try and visit in mid May before school is out, if you can.

OP is asking about Theodore Roosevelt National Park, though I can see how his previous comment could be misunderstood. OP, it is about 40 minutes from Dickinson to the South Unit of TRNP.

FWIW, I stayed in Belfield, where a couple of lodging options are available. Nothing luxurious, but perfectly clean and comfortable. And even closer to the park than Dickinson and MUCH cheaper than Medora.
