Pathetic decision just for 5-8" of school when kids supposed to be bussed or use subways. Back then I went to public school and even with 12" of snow out we all loved recess.
While that was typical of NYC itself, even the suburbs immediately bordering NYC (I grew up in one in the 1970s and 1980s) have always closed for that much snow, sometimes even a bit less. Making it a remote day instead of simply closing makes it a lot easier for NYC to do so "in anticipation" and is less of a big deal if the storm is a bust than if they actually closed outright.
The first time I had school cancelled was the blizzard of 96. I remember at the time they said it was the first time school was cancelled in something like 18 years. A few years later it snowed something like 3 inches and I took the train to high school to find the doors locked as school was cancelled. It was such a small amount of snow I didn't even both to check the news hoping for a cancellation.
In the last decade or so they cancel it for small amounts of snow so often .
And now with remote learning (which won't accomplish anything tomorrow) they'll be cancelling it even more.
Remote learning means the children are not off the hook! It is easier to make the decision now rather than early tomorrow morning when parents might have to scramble if they are working and their children aren't going into school. This way the parents have time to make suitable arrangements.
Oh, please. I am a parent and we had remote learning last year. The teachers give assignments the day before and the students don't see a teacher all day.
Not only were schools closed, DSNY didn't collect in my neighborhood on Monday, the day before the snow. Of course that means they skipped the collection entirely because they were working on the snow on Tuesday. What were the sanitation workers doing on Monday? Waiting in the garage in case it started snowing a day early?
