I'm a Marlton girl born and raised on a farm there. I remember alot about the area of Marlton and Cherry Hill from growing up. I was born in 1956 and lived most of my life on Elmwood Road in Marlton. My grandparents lived right next door and owned a large chicken farm. He was the expiditor for the Cherry Hill Inn for many years until his death in 1966. My husband is Cherry Hill boy who live on Columbia Lake and went to St. Petes and Cherry Hill West class of 1973. We talk alot about what life was like in the"olden" days and how much fun you could have when you were a kid because you used your imagination. You went out to play from the time you got up in the morning till the time you went to bed and you were never bored. I could walk along Elmwood Road as a young kid and never be afraid. The only people who drove on that road were your neighbors and you knew everyone of them within a 5 mile radius. We had animals to play with and keep you entertianed, I would dress my neighbors cats up in doll clothes and they would let me pull them around in a wagon. My husband was a busboy at the Hawiian Cottage when he was 15. I remember went it burned down it was owned by the Zucci family. The mansion on Springdale Road that burned down a couple of years ago was Charlie Foulfes house. He is the owner of the CH triplex, Mall Chevrolet and Mt Ephriam Dodge. Valentinos was owned by the NY Gambino family. On the corner where the Diamond Diner was, San Suci Restaurant was there. Lets not forget the big old Emerald City where Subaru is now and Where the Latin Casino was. When that opened I remember being there on opening night cover charge was 10.00 alot for back in the 70's. How about Winstons by where the library was and Richmonds. Great onion soup and burgers. Calico Kitchen on 70? The Hideaway off Brace Road, Shepherds Inn so many things to remember that our children never got to experience or know. I will be moving from this state that I have lived in for over 54 years on October 22nd to my new home in Cape Coral FL but I will take all my memories with me. I only wish that life as we knew it could have been experienced by our children and grand children.... it was so much simpler.

I moved to Cherry Hill when I was 13, in 1964. My father had taken a promotion that came with a transfer. We moved from Grand Rapids Michigan & thought were were moving to an urban area. Fooled us. Valentinos took over the building that had been O'Henry's.

Hey, I hope it goes well for you in Florida. If you decide that it's not for you, I found a great little town 30 miles west of Charlotte called Kings Mountain. It's Cherry Hill, circa 1964, with a little downtown instead of a mall. The NC natives call people who move from the north to FL then come here half-backs.

See my post of "weekend in south Jersey."
I drove past the former Hawaiian Cottage- so wish they'd saved that building, it's such a post-war icon.
I drove past pretty much everything in several counties, getting lost (aunt wanted to go to Salem for something historic) and I couldn't remember how to get to my father's and almost had to go to Camden to turn left on Rt. 70. So much commerce, it knocked me out.
The leafy subdivisions that were new when I was a kid are modest and nice and peaceful, and there seem to be plenty of urbane restaurants and places and all. The suburbs are not sterile at all, but the driving is insane. (Note- stay left on I-295 south if you want a slight chance in the world of getting off to Rt. 42 alive!)

Kind of like having racing season all over town, 365 days of the year, isn't it?

Damn is Philly really that horrible? I've always liked it because it is a very historic city. In many ways it is much more manageable of a city than New York is. And it seems much more promising for the future considering the economy.

Not to get off subject.

Last month when I was up there I was in & out of Philly & around South Jersey. The traffic was heavy but manageable, but the real kicker in Cherry Hill is the god-forsaken condition of the roads.

all you have to do is to drive the Blvd and the Schuylkill and vine street extension during rush hour and you will love Cherry hill traffic! lol.. And you do realize that most likely 20 % of the drivers in Philly have no insurance or even a license! I know people who have been driving for years and never bothered to even get a license over there..

I found an old aerial photo of the Acme that was once at Ellisburg Circle. This shows a piece of the circle. Rt 70 is there too, & the 2 way road that you see is Kings Highway before it was widened.

I practically lived at the Cherry Hill Mall from 1970 through 1977 as a teen into my early 20's. I loved to eat at the cafeteria with the "sunken floor", the German and Greek restaurants (with a belly dancer that my younger brothers got a kick out of), and shopping at the great stores. Remember "A Shop Called East" that sold drug paraphinalia before it was outlawed and the original "Spencer's Gifts" with the gag gifts like fake vomit and woopee cushions? My mom worked at the Olga's diner, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Latin Casino at various times. We kids went to the drive-in theater in our pajamas, playing in their playground prior to the start of the movie and fighting off mosquitoes as night fell.
