Grass for Deer (Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Texas)

I bought the adjoining wooded lot (1/3 acre) and I just had the underbrush and downed limbs/trees removed from it. I want to plant some type of grass or something to attract the deer for them to eat. I see deer just about every day already. I live in NW Arkansas and I want something that I will not have to water. Right now it is to hot and to dusty to do anything. I was thinking about winter rye this fall/winter.
You may have mowed down the stuff they most like to eat. It's not bad to thin, but also allow some of that native brush to come back.
Deer are browsers, like goats. They prefer shrubs and leaves to plain grass... but they will browse on oats, alfalfa and clover. Think grains and legumes, more than grass.

They did not do much browsing on the lot. My two lots are like an infield of a race track that totals about 3/4 of an acre. I see deer eating all around us by the road. I put some corn out one time that attracted two huge bucks. I want to give them more options where we can watch them.

Corn really isn't that good for deer even though it's the go to for a lot of people. You need to be careful doing that. I don't know Arkansas game law but a lot of states consider doing that as "baiting" which can be illegal whether you're hunting or not.
I'm assuming you'll be sitting on your porch or in your backyard watching deer. Just keep in mind that the deer just won't stop at your food plot but any plants or shrubs you have in your yard will become part of the buffet if deer like them. And they like damned near everything.

Deer will eat just about anything green. I've seen them eating grass, rose hedge, mesquite, tree leaves, etc. They also love acorns. Corn is crack for deer, they can't get enough, but it has no real food value. In Texas, using corn isn't considered baiting, and if they tried to ban deer feeders, there would be a mass revolt. Where I hunt, if I am on foot, the only deer I see are 200 yards away and running. We generally hunt from blinds with corn spread to get teh deer to at least slow down.
