Bouncing off the movies that everyone loves but I don't thread - which was a good one - what are some firms that people should watch and deserve more love?
1. The Apostle - Robert DuVall as a very flawed but sincere Pentecostal preacher. Farrah Fawcett is also in it.
2. Grand Torino - Clint Eastwood as elderly man reluctantly making friends with the changing residents of his Mid-Western neighborhood. Uplisting.
3. The Holdovers - a boy and a man come of age at a New England prep school in the 1970s.
4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - not usually a Quentin Tarantino fan, but this one was a strange "feel good movie".
5, Silkwood - It didn't get lots of attention at the time, but it should have.
6. Stand by Your Man - Jessica Chastain shimmers and self-destructs as Tammy Wynette.
7. The Unbearable Lightness of Being - just watch it. I have to see it again myself. his Polish heritage into a profession. You do not need to like Jack Black.
8. The Polka King - Under-rated movie with Jack Black as as a man who made being of Polish heritage a profession.
9. Lilies of the Field - Sidney Poitier and German nuns in the American Southwest.
10, Lars and the Real Girl - a lonely man, an inflatable doll and a small town that embraces them.
I have so many more, but I can't wait to hear yours!
I know lots of people are generally down on remakes, but every now and then one not only succeeds but excels. The 1988 remake of THE BLOB is actually a great movie.
My personal favorite movie that nobody seems to have ever heard of is Catch and Release with Jennifer Garner, Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Kevin Smith, and Sam Jaeger, among others. It's no Academy award-winner, but it's got a good plot and while it starts out sad, it's a great romantic comedy.
Totally agree on Silkwood. Cher, Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell...it wasn't exactly a sleeper, though; it got Oscar nods.
I'll be taking notes on some others here. Been looking for some new movies.
6. Stand by Your Man - Jessica Chastain shimmers and self-destructs as Tammy Wynette.
I'm confused.
When did Jessica Chastain do a version of this? It's not listed on IMDB, just the 1981 original starring Annette O'Toole (who gave a credible performance).
Jessica Chastain did give a memorable performance as Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, however. She won an Oscar for it.
Guessing sleepers really depends on the viewing habits of the people you are making the list for. It is not possible for me to say if any or all of these movies are "sleepers" for anyone reading this thread, but they are all movies that I don't ever see referenced on lists anywhere, or reviewed, or in movie reactions and such. They seem to be forgotten, so I am calling them "sleepers" because IMHO they are all under the radar. Maybe I am wrong. YMMV if any or all of these are true sleepers or not.

No. I was confused/ Ot wasn't "Stand by your Man". It was "George and Tammy" and yes, Jessica Chastain played Tammy.
