Set in New Zealand, a little boy (10 or so) is adopted by a rural couple, a wonderful woman and grumpy man. Mom dies early on, little boy runs off into the forest, and grumpy old man goes in to get him, setting the stage for a suspenseful, scary, happy, and exhilarating adventure that changes both their lives.

Sam Neil is the only person you'll recognize.
If you liked that, you might also like Careful, He Might Hear You, which has a somewhat similar plot. It's a very touching AU movie & the young boy who plays the lead just breaks your heart with his realistic acting.

I'm going to check out the one you mentioned... sounds good.

I loved both of them. Haunting, though. Not in a ghost way, the other way.

Wow, this is a great thread. So many movies I knew of, but never watched. Or saw so long ago I've forgotten most of the plot. Will certainly fill up my movie card for the foreseeable future. Need to make a list and bookmark them on my various sites.

Some others that occurred to me:

Black Widow - Not the Marvel superhero; Debra Winger chases down a serial husband killer while doing battle with sexism in the workplace. Good performances all around. A guilty pleasure, really.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090738...black%2520widw

Under the Volcano - Classy adaptation of a great novel. How can you go wrong with Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset in the lead roles?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088322...520the%2520vol

Local Hero - Oil executive goes to Scotland to dismantle a bucolic seaside town that captures his heart. It will yours, too.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085859...local%2520hero

Breaker Morant - True story about a moral dilemma often faced in times of war.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080310...breaker%2520mo

Crossing Delancey - Young Jewish woman pushes back on the Orthodox community in her Lower East Side neighborhood and tries to live life on her own terms; finds love on their terms in the end. Mamala knows best. Sweet without being cloying; great cast to boot.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou - Great cast, story set in the 1920's or so and is basically the greek classic The Odyssey for a plot, lots of great music and songs.

Spirited Away - First animated movie to win an Oscar, lots of deep meaning, sorta Alice in Wonderland

Peanut Butter Falcon - Indy film about a special needs kid that wants to be a pro wrestler and a guy with his own problems cross paths.
