The oak trees were so cold when it fell to -40 in Warsaw that some of them actually exploded. It was after the civil war and some veterans thought they were being attacked again....heard that from a local meteorologist.

It's kind of strange that the same town would have both the coldest and warmest temperature records for the state. I wonder how many people, horses and livestock froze to death that night ? I hope I never see 40 below.

Wallace Beery (1885-1949) Clay County, Missouri
He ran away from home and joined The Ringling Brothers Circus but quit two years later after getting clawed by a leopard. He appeared in over 250 movies and won an Oscar for " The Champ. " He was the uncle of Noah Beery Jr. who played James Garner's father in The Rockford Files.

Edgar Buchanan (1903-1979) Humansville, Missouri
He started out as a Dentist and later became an actor. He appeared in over 100 films but is best known for playing Uncle Joe on the TV series " Petticoat Junction. "

Jack Oakie (1903-1978) Sedalia, Missouri
He started out working on Wall Street and was almost killed in the Wall Street bombing on September 16, 1920. He did radio shows and movies and is best known for his part in the movie " The Great Dictator. "

Alice Ghostley (1924-2007) Eve, Missouri
She appeared in numerous movies and television shows including Bewitched where she played the character Esmeralda.

Barney Phillips (1913-1982) St.Louis, Missouri
He appeared in many films and television shows from the 1950s and 60s.
He is remembered as the owner of a diner with a third eye in the middle of his forehead in the Twilight Zone episode " Will the real Martian please stand up? "

Dabbs Greer (1917-2007) Newton county, Missouri
In 1938 he made $5 a day as an extra in the film " Jesse James " which was filmed in Pineville Missouri.
He appeared in almost 200 television series including Little House on the prairie.

Jean Harlow (1911-1937) Kansas City, Missouri
She was an actress and sex symbol of the 1930s.
She made over 30 films and was one of the top moneymaking stars appearing in movies with Clark Gable,Cary Grant,Spencer Tracy,James Cagney and James Stewart.

Frank McGrath (1903-1967) Mound city, Missouri
He was an actor and stuntman.
At the age of 53 he had just recovered from a broken back and he did 3 horse falls and drag scenes in the John Wayne film " The Searchers. " He is best known for playing " Charlie Wooster " On the TV series Wagon Train.

Cliff Edwards (1895-1971) Hannibal, Missouri
Known as " Ukelele Ike "
He was a singer and voice actor who did the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's " Pinocchio. "
Started out in Vaudeville and made many records as a popular singer in the 1920s and later appeared in movies in the 30s and 40s. Most of his money went for alimony for his three former wives and he declared bankruptcy four times. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol and ended up a penniless welfare patient at a California nursing home.

Ed Asner was born in Kansas City.

What is now Kelly's Bar in Westport was originally Boone's Trading Post, owned by the grandson of Daniel Boone, Albert Boone. Merchandise would be offloaded from boats at the Missouri river and brought down what is now Broadway to the trading post.

Mickey Mouse was invented in Kansas City. Walt Disney's family moved to 3028 Bellefontaine when he was a kid. He took classes at the KC Art Institute and later had a studio at 1127 E. 31st. A mouse lived in his studio - and inspired Mickey Mouse.
