A lot of that fits in perfectly with a trip to the Presque Isle area near Alpena on the NE lower. You will be super close to the UP if you want to discover this area too. What a beautiful area with so much to discover and enjoy. Also enjoy the Tawas area a lot that is a bit closer to activities involving people.

A lot depends on if you want busy touristy type places (Traverse City), or low key relaxing type places.

Personally, if I never went to Traverse City again, it wouldn't bother me. About the most touristy type places I enjoy are Charlevoix, Bay Harbor, Harbor Springs, Torch Lake, and St. Ignace.

Plan on doing a lot of driving though, if you want to check out a lot of places. I've mentioned some of the places in the lower that are worth going to and will add Leland's fish town, and Suttons Bay.

If you go to the UP. I suggest St. Ignace, Mackinaw Island, go check out Whitefish Point, take a boat ride out of Hessel and tour the Les Cheneaux Islands. Take a drive to Drummond Island, you can hike or ATV there. Grand Marais is also a great place.

The thing is, you really need to plan it out to take advantage of all the wonderful places Michigan has to offer. Maybe home base somewhere and day trip out ?

Beaver Island

A Dark Sky site, completely surrounded by Lake Michigan, accessible via a 2-hour Ferry Ride from Charlevoix, or by short flight on small planes (the Island has two airports).

A large sandy public beach on the west side, and a small sandy public beach on the East side at the edge of the only village on the Island.

A public Campground, although primative. Restaurants, lodgings, a full grocery store, bike rentals.

Almost all roads are dirt or two-tracks. One section of paved road outside the village.

Approximstely 600 year-round residents, summer population is MUCH higher due to Summer residents and tourists.

If you're eyeing Marquette or Traverse City for a summer getaway rental, remember that rental prices fluctuate based on factors like location, size, and amenities. Expect higher rates during peak times, like summer, due to increased demand, while off-peak periods may offer better deals. Timing is key for snagging the best prices.

Default Summer Vacation Spots

If you're seeking for a peaceful getaway surrounded by untouched nature, both regions have plenty of options. In the UP, places like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offer stunning sandstone cliffs and the pristine waters of Lake Superior. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is another great spot, known for its beautiful waterfalls and lush forests.
In the Northern LP, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore features sandy beaches and towering dunes overlooking Lake Michigan (My Fav Place to visit . Cities like Traverse City offer easy access to both nature and town amenities.
For a tranquil escape from crowds, consider renting a cabin or cottage near one of these areas. Don't forget to check out local events or festivals during your visit for some added fun!
