I keep reading about them leaving. Also maybe the definition of middle class is different in coastal California. My question is are what neighborhoods/cities are they still in? Maybe the northwest part of the San Fernando Valley? Far eastern Orange County (Yorba Linda, Orange, Tustin, Fullerton) maybe there too? It looks most whites though live in the SUPER expensive beach areas (Santa Monica, Redondo, Manhattan, Newport and Huntington Beach, or up in and around the hills for a billion dollars.

You know of any? It seems the Hispanic middle class (Perhaps Asian too) has filled in where the white middle class has left.

Please define "middle class." I'm white and live in Rancho Santa Margarita (OC) along with many other whites, but not sure exactly what "middle class" means.

You have to consider that many of us have been here for decades, since long before real estate went through the roof. It was not hard to buy a house with an under-$100k salary as late as the early 2000s. The real estate turnover in this area is low; though younger people may be moving away, their parents are not selling their houses.

That’s true.

My aunt lives in Lake Forest in a $1.2 million SFH and she is only a data clerk making $50k/year. She bought the house in 1995 when it was dirt cheap.

My wife and I made a combined income of $180K and we can’t afford a house like that in 2024

The white middle class isn't specifically leaving California, they are leaving cities. Even if you look at Texas, Georgia, and Florida, the major cities all have declining white populations and specifically the middle class.

We bought in 1997 and were aware that real estate prices had been rising, and wanted to get into the market. (Our apartment rent kept rising, too.) Our agent ran the numbers and told us happily that we had been approved for a $200k loan. That seemed like a ridiculous sum of money. We were not going to spend $200k on a house!

Those were the days, all right.
