I’ve lived here 30 years.
The traffic and road construction.
The strip
None of the casinos value locals anymore
Cost of living has sky rocketed
I’m retiring in a year and a half and moving to Coronado, Panama.
Weather and cost of living is cheaper.

Cost of living was once a big reason to move here, and now it is out of control. No value is correct. Totally agree with you.

Also, we had too many CA residents that came in, and brought their CA attitudes with them. Not very friendly people, for the most part. Very full of themselves, and don't bring much to the table.

If I were to pick one thing it would be the traffic & road construction. It has just gotten out of control. We've been here 7 years and even in 2017 when we moved here it wasn't as bad as it is now.

I don't gamble much except for some video poker every now and then, but it used to be the local casinos would give away some pretty nice stuff. Now you have to play and earn points to get anything out of them. That $5 pie they give away on Thanksgiving could end up costing you $50 bucks.

Been living here in Henderson, just north of Boulder City, since last September and totally agree with all of the negative posts concerning the entire area (Henderson/Las Vegas). My wife told me that she always wanted to live in Vegas or close to it, and now that she does, she doesn't like it at all.

So many people, including California folks, are moving here and it's so insane. Just glad I'm SS retired and my wife works from home. The traffic is getting worse and worse, and, with oncoming summer tourism, the traffic will get even worser. Lots of wind and dirt/dust flying. Have never lived anywhere where there was so much wind/dirt/dust, but there's nothing to stop the dirt/dust from flying. The heat; without a doubt, definitely getting too hot for us. And, unfriendliness, that we've seen anyway. Lifestyle here is getting faster and faster. It's darn near dangerous for an older senior to drive on the freeways or streets here.

By this September, will be "checking out of here" and "checking in" up north. Still have all of our winter clothes from when we lived in northern Colorado.

Henderson/Vegas is made for the young generation who needs employment and for those that love desert living.

California residents have been moving to Las Vegas for the last 60 years or more.

In the 1990s through about 2005, they were selling their homes in Orange County and San Diego and moving into Summerlin and Green Valley Ranch, and everyone in Nevada politics loved it because they were bringing value to the community and making it more upscale.

Fast forward to 2008, the economy crashed and Las Vegas was hit hardest. Homes were abandoned and selling at fireside prices. Lots of investors came in and bought housing in bulk, and then turned around and rented it out. That drew in a completely different element of people into Las Vegas. Most were not the upscale transplants from the 1990s.

A lot of people who moved from California to Las Vegas after 2008 did so not because they wanted to, but because they had to.

I don't get this sentence (in red above). There have been a lot of people leave California, but could anyone tell that by the amount of traffic that is still in the L.A./Orange County/Riverside/San Bernadino areas?

But, Las Vegas has "jumped the shark" for me. I don't have the motivation anymore to live here. I think it was the lack of a culture with substance that really finished me off. Add the corporate nonsense. The schools named after people with no academic or significant achievements other than silly casino ties or other meaningless backgrounds. The poor schools. The heat in the summer. On and on I could go.

So, when did Las Vegas "jump the shark" for you?
Vegas has been tacky since day one. Full of "wannabe big shots" blowing up their credit card once a year then back home to Nowheresville and hanging out at the bowling alley telling tall tales about their killer weekend in Vegas.

Nobody moves to Vegas for the schools no matter who they are named after.

The weather has always been brutal in the summers.

I've been in 96, 04, 11 and this year. There is usually something else going on that brings me there. You go for the 3-4-5 days and then go home. Stayed at the Wynn, they wanted $800 for 18 holes of golf at their course. I laughed at the guy and killed the day doing something else.

I will say it is full of losers and I'm not talking about the gamblers.

We have been here for 7 years, and I can say I still love it. I am not able to drive but recently have been using Uber to see doctors in Summerlin. We live in far N Las Vegas, Lamb and the 15, or Pecos and 215. I go at 8:30 am and do not see the traffic, same coming home. Not like San Antonio, or Dallas.
I'm a Texan, and I find people more friendly here, than in Texas. I know the people at our local grocery stores, KayKay even gave me a X-mas card and she is our cashier at our Smith's. People not being friendly is something I do NOT see.
I think a lot of people move here with the idea of "Look at me, I am in Vegas", then they miss their neighbors and back home. I don't have Face Book, no family, no friends I miss back in Texas, Vegas is my home. I do miss my Tex-Mex and Southern food, but I am a good cook.

The one thing I do NOT like about Vegas is the long brutal winters. It starts when I have to wear long pants and a jacket. When it drops below 80 degrees I am miserable. We have already started looking at Mexico for our winters. I need 80 and above year around. Ok, I am joking about the "long brutal winters", but not about spending the winters in Mexico.
Vegas is what you make of it. World class entertainment, we have it. Great weather, got that too.
We cemented our roots here in January. We bought our final resting place at Palm Mortuary Northwest. Nice view of the mountains, I won't see it, but at least that is where I will rest.
I have said it before, Vegas is not for everyone. I thought I would hate it, but fell in love. I think a lot of people move here with the "Look at me". I moved here for the SUN, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Throw in the entertainment anytime I want it, or sitting on my front/back porch without the humidity, or bugs eating me. For those who do not like Las Vegas, I wish you happiness where you move to.

Traffic is the big negative. Las Vegas hasn't jumped the shark yet for us, but traffic definitely sux. The positives are still here - world class entertainment, more celebrity chef restaurants per capita than anywhere in the USA, a surprisingly great network of bicycle trails, etc.

We live in Henderson for the summer, and live up in Utah for ski season (Deer Valley). It is fascinating to look at the difference in the quality of posts on Nextdoor in the two areas.
  • Up in Utah on Nextdoor a typical post will be, "can you recommend a plumber?" or "there's a dog wandering around the neighborhood" or "slow down on Old Ranch Road 'cause there's a mama moose and two young calfs". The replies are always helpful.
  • In Henderson on Nextdoor a typical post will be, "someone broke into my truck last night" and with 30 minutes there will be 75 low-IQ replies replete with misspellings & poor grammar including recommending a Urologist, saying that anyone who breaks into his truck parked in the driveway will be met with a .44 magnum, someone saying everything worked better when The Mob ran Vegas, panning a local tavern's poor food, a rant that no one want's to work, someone blaming the skilled tradesman shortage on Biden, someone replying it is all Trump's fault, and someone saying the noise outside is making her "fur-baby" neurotic.
And, of course, Southern Nevada Water Authority correctly says everyone needs to engage in water conservation yet our local governments approve more and more residential real estate development leading to more and more people who use water. <sigh>.

It appears you don't work..so for a place to go and die, it would still beat the likes of LA, DC, Boston, etc.
