How hard would it be to get into & out of johnson & carter counties (east of elizabethton) on a daily bases in the winter, also would be running a lot of back roads in that area in winter.

From the looks of most of it i'm afraid your all going to say good luck and better have a darn good winch with a 4 wheel drive.

While i'm asking questions, what would some of the worst roads be in winter in eastern tn.

This past winter was my first one in the Stoney Creek area of Carter County. There were some snows that lasted a few days, and schools were closed several days. But I had no trouble getting out and driving the 25 miles to work. I drive a little Honda Civic - no problem.

Some areas of Johnson County you may encounter problems, especially if they have a heavy snowfall. I believe that Mountain City does get more snow than just about anywhere in the Tri-Cities... all depends.

We have had some pretty mild winters lately, but parts of Johnson County would be tough during a good snow. The state does a decent job of clearing the main roads, but the back roads can be very narrow, steep and windy. I wouldnt want to drive them in the snow.

There is a thread on the main TN forum (at the moment it is on page 2) by LauraC called "Don't do this road in winter" which may be helpful to you. There are many different areas of NETN in there. Take a look, it might be of assistance.

I prettywell figued it would be a gamble with the odds against you on some of those roads up there, always best to hear it straight from the horses mouth from those that have been there done that deal, so kinda scrap that idea and onto the next brainstorm
