Haha, this is pretty funny.

Actually, when I first saw them I thought they looked too much like NY state license plates.

Also, the slogan is really corny. What's wrong with "The Sunflower State?"

Kansas drivers riled by ‘Mizzou colors’ on new default license plate
Quote:
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly unveiled the state’s newly-designed default license plate on Wednesday to mixed reactions.

According to the current plan, the plates will start appearing on cars starting March of 2024.

But some drivers tell FOX4 that the state should seriously reconsider.

The new license plates abandon the current bright white and light blue for a darker color scheme which reminds some people of a cross-state rivalry.

To the stars? That's a partial translation from Latin of the Kansas official state motto, Ad Astera per Aspera (to the stars through struggle). I agree that Sunflower State would have been better, just like NY used to have Empire State, FL used to have Sunshine State, GA used to have Peach State and dozens of others from the past.

I favor simple black letters on white license plate background like Texas currently uses on the default plate.

Kansans seem to get riled up about when it comes to license plates. I recall major controversies when they wanted to require front plates and when they wanted to eliminate the county designator.

I kind of like “To the Stars.” I lived in Kansas for 16 years and I’ve lived in Missouri for 39 now. I couldn’t tell you the Missouri state motto. But I do know Ad Astra.

Could it be more ugly? I bet there is some odd thing behind the choice. I think the Governor and her administration sort of hate most Kansans, so maybe this is way to even the score over the many times she was overridden by the "people"!

We like it as the 'default plate' (I've never spoken to anyone who doesn't).

When I moved to Texas in the late 2000s, we had the 'cowboy and the moon' license plate as the 'default plate', re which I'd say the same as re the current white and black....I've never spoken to anyone who didn't like it.

Then we switched to (as the default plate).....ugh.....I guess it was supposed to be patriotic, but it was a busy mess. I didn't like it. I know a lot of other residents didn't like it, and it's my understanding that many LEOs didn't like it re visual clarity/reading it.

Thankfully, by 2014 at the latest, we switched to the nice black letters on white plate that we currently have as the 'default plate'.

I would doubt the governor has any say in the design of the state license plates.

Well, I kinda get the license plate rancor. The former one was nice if a bit bland. This one is that blue and yellow I despise…West Virginia, PA, the old NY plates…all among my least fav. A license plate is sort of a mini-ad for the state it’s representing, and this looks kinda terrible. At least it doesn’t have a county or a website on it. Or that stupid Excelsior thing on the NY plates which LOOKS like a county.

But hey, another classic thread here.

Poor Wichita State. Can't have their place in the sun because they have the same school colors as dumb 'ole Mizzou.
