I am thinking of accepting an employment offer in Iowa city and curious about the availability of high rise apartments and what downtown life style is like. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

If you're looking for downtown living and hi rises, I would consider Cedar Rapids as well. Iowa City may be a college town, but it's population is only 75,000 with no surrounding suburbs.

While there are some apartment and condo buildings throughout Iowa city, there are very few what I would call high rise apartments. The downtown is your typical university college town - restaurants, bars. Very family friendly - especially during the summer - very safe. Coralville and North Liberty are close by and offer a little variety in terms of retail and restaurants but again I wouldn't say there aren't many high rise. I agree with previous poster that if that is something you are looking for you might want to look into Cedar Rapids (about 30 mins outside of IC).

And of course the higher you are, the farther you can flick.

I would definitely recommend Iowa City over Cedar Rapids especially since your job would be located there. Here are three high-rises in downtown Iowa City on the Ped Mall. There may be more being built downtown currently. i can't keep up with all the changes going on downtown, all for the better.

I agree, definitely IC over Cedar Rapids, which has always seemed pretty shabby to me. When I last was in IC the high rises by the downtown walking mall had just been built. I've never seen them inside, but they'll be newish, anyway!
