There are 2 towns northeast of Ft Wayne called Leo and Grabill that might appeal to you. They are in Amish territory and people were moving into that area back when I still lived in Ft Wayne. Those used to be peaceful areas. Not sure what they are like now.
Thanks for the suggestions. I took a peek into some info about Leo and Grabill and even though they both seem to have a very good rating overall, I could not find any stats about crime, etc.

What are your impressions of Fort Wayne? For a relatively large city the stats don't look too bad. Fort Wayne's crime stats look much better than that of South Bend -- which is a much smaller city.

Fort Wayne has the usual crime for a city its size. Violent crime is mostly related to drugs. Over a 34 year period of time I lived on the northwest, northeast and southwest sides of Fort Wayne and the only crime I personally encountered was back in the early 80s when I was renting an apartment and someone stole the wheels off my 1983 ElCamino. Fort Wayne does have a semiprofessional hockey team and I think the baseball team is a AA team. The baseball stadium is probably about 15 years old and is located in downtown Fort Wayne. I liked going there a lot. There used to be a semiprofessional basketball team but I'm not sure if they still have that. Perhaps someone else can chime in and set me straight on that.

Fort Wayne has a walking/biking trail that runs throughout the city that is pretty decent. The city parks are nice too. They also have a great zoo located in one of the city parks on the near northwest side of town. The city does a good job of maintaining the parks.

I always thought that Fort Wayne had good medical care. Lutheran and Parkview had relatively new hospitals when I lived there. Just about every specialty you can ever need is located there. I never had much wait time seeing a doctor but that situation may have changed by now. I live in Bloomington Indiana now and the wait time here is much longer than I ever experienced in Fort Wayne.

Fort Wayne has a relatively low cost of living too. Homes and rent are below the national average. I lived in coastal Florida for 10 years and the cost of homes there was double what Fort Wayne is. You can't rent a 1 bedroom apartment in coastal Florida for much under $2000 a month. I'm sure you could get a 1 bedroom in Fort Wayne for around half that.

There are lots of restaurants and places to shop in Fort Wayne. I think chain restaurants are more plentiful than the old mom and pop restaurants they used to have. Traffic can be bad in certain areas too. I was just up in Fort Wayne in mid September and I noticed that the traffic at I69 and Hwy 3 (Lima road) had gotten worse since I was last there.

Leo and Grabill used to be sleepy little communities with little crime at all. Leo is probably connected to Fort Wayne by now. Grabill is a little farther out. Lots of Amish buggies out that way. There's a reservoir near Grabill too.

Good luck to you. I wish I could be of more help but I'm sure things have changed in the 10 years since I left Fort Wayne. I strongly considered going back there when we left Florida in March but we decided on southern Indiana instead. So far we like it here.

I probably should also spend some time driving around to get more cognizance of the towns and areas I may move. Thanks a lot for your insights!

Leo is getting pretty pricey in terms of housing and Grabill isn't far behind. I don't think there are many place to rent in Leo proper...you'd probably be renting in north or northeast FW. I'm a FW native and I'm not a huge fan of living here...mostly weather related but also it's just a very unhealthy city...not much to do here in crappy weather and there are WAY too many food places (fast food, chains and local places). It seems like all anyone ever does here in winter is eat and drink. Summers are better but it can be humid (although not bad compared to Southern US).
