"The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation says that the U.S. Department of the Interior is placing portions of Shab-eh-nay Reservation lands into a trust for the nation.

In a news release, the nation says that means that Illinois is once again home to a federally recognized Native American Tribal Nation.

The U.S. government illegally auctioned off 1,280 acres of reservation land in DeKalb County while Chief Shab-eh-nay was away and visiting family in Kansas in the 1800s."

Seems like the Chief Shabbona forest preserve is now sovereign nation.

This is fantastic news! A long time coming for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. So happy to see Illinois welcoming a federally recognized tribe back home.

Chicago's Uptown neighborhood is home to more Native Americans than any single reservation in the country. (!!)

I lived in Uptown for a few yrs....One day, walking down the street, I noticed an Indian lying in the street with his ear to the pavement. I went over to see if he was OK. "What's up?" I asked. Without lifting or turning his head, he answered slowly-"Blonde woman....yellow Cadillac...45 mile per hour....four blocks from here."...."You can tell all that by listening to the ground?" I asked in disbelief...."No," he answered. ..."--run me down ten minutes ago."

Blackhawk's autobiography is a good read giving Insight to the problems the Indians had dealing with the US govt who didn't understand the native way of life. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/7097/7097-h/7097-h.htm

Thanks for sharing.

I used to live in KS so the tribal name is familiar down there, I'd not known they'd been ripped off in Illinois previously but well, corruption in IL is pretty much par for the course.

Love it. Funny.

While this "new" reservation is being applauded, it's best to look at what else is beginning as well.

This may also set up a new level of corruption and lack of law enforcement which is the hallmark of reservations all over the country.

You're going to have elections for reservation leaders who will be handling untold government monies being funneled into the rez. Every project or business being set up within the reservation will need to be cleared through the tribal government. Eventually, someone will set up their families to glean off the dollars much of which will be illegal until they get caught. Then it will be an opportunity for NEW leaders who will tend to do the same thing. Rinse and repeat.

Now, in this new reservation, they're going to be (cough, cough) a "sovereign" nation, almost totally dependent on another nation financially for it's existence. They'll now be policed primarily by the BIA. The state will have very little say on what goes on there. They'll have their own courts. As someone who lives in a state with reservations all over the place, this combination just adds to more corruption potential.

I HATE the reservation concept. It's especially bad where I am from. The Native American people living there by and large are worse off because of it. Only a few benefit from it.

Hopefully enough money can be made from the eventual or already built casinos within the rez. borders so that the residents can have some income. Being in Illinois and not out on the prairie, I'm sure will help in this. Keep in mind, regular paychecks without having to work for it, will bring a lifestyle ripe with many other problems. Drugs and alcohol being the result for people having no purpose.

I can see the joy in the forming of this reservation, but it's also creating the potential for a can of worms.

Not all reservations have more negatives than positives. The Meskwaki tribe in Iowa has been very successful at providing a good safe home for tribal residents and avoiding most of the pitfalls in reservation communities. They're the only recognized tribal land in Iowa. In a few situations, total self determination can work.

Yep, I've read blackhawks autobiography.
Shabbonahs contemporary and i guess his rival to an extent.

Both were on opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to the incoming settlers. Violence vs mediation.

In the end they both lost their land.

Right.
I got interested with illinois history wondering where all the names of parks and streets came from.
We got a pottowatomi park and whenever i googled potwattomi it came up with KS reservations first.

Strange how names and histories span so far.

Yes, i was just about to type aswell.
There's some reservations out there that are doing pretty good for their people.

We just tend to see the bad ones we always hear about

Probably should not use the word Ever. Not sure if there were reservations in the 1800's. Then you have a branch of Trail of Tears thru southern IL on their way from Kentucky to points west.
