I would like serious info on what presenting problems got your surgery authorized.

I did not qualify due to marginal size several years ago (they did not "hang" low enough) but have since developed neck, head and shoulder pain that is chronic and severe. My only diagnosis is "migraine" but I am getting desperate to end this constant pain.

Please if you have successful surgical experience that might help, tell me what it was. I am 5'5", 156 pounds, size 38DD right now. The smallest I have ever been is 36D.

No lectures or male harassment, please.

hmm. I do not know what the criteria is currently. I was approved back in 2000. I had shoulder and neck pain as well as back pain. The first time around, when all they did was the prior auth, the insurance company denied me. Then the surgeon had to write a letter and most likely include some medical records.

Have you talked to your dr about these new symptomatic developments? All of these things will need to be included in the work up and the letter to your insurance company. They will need to know for how long it has been going on and if you are...skip that, I see you are not really overweight.

They will try and see if you tried to do anything to alleviate your problems not related to surgery. Exercise, change in posture, etc.

Heres a question for you. Do your bra straps make marks in your shoulders? Have you tried a different size, style?

These are some of the questions your dr as well as the insurance company will ask. Of course when he does his examination, he will be able to see your shoulders and if this has occurred. The marks stay for a long time.

Good luck in it all, I know it is a pain. Then again, it is a few months from your post, so I have no idea what has happened since then.

Hey,there. I am a male, but I wonder how do people get a migraine, neck, and shoulders from having big breasts? I can see why you would get back pain. The reason why is that there ever I hear something about breast reduction on television, people talk about back pain. So,please educate me!

Default breast reduction helped with my migraines

I had the surgery in Aug.2008. I only wanted to reduce the weight on my shoulders. Since that time I have no longer needed maxalt or imitrex injections for migraines. What a surprise! I get by on Advils. No more throwing up either. I am 5'4" and I went from an M cup to an F cup. Wish I had of known sooner. The quality of my life is much better now. I still have no sensitivity in the left nipple (that could take up to 2 years the surgeon said). If it never returns, I don't care. It was worth it!! I feel so much better, lighter and my clothes look great on me. No more evenings lying in bed in the darkness, hugging the toilet, driving home form work at noon, clutching my head in pain....don't miss that at all! I posted this in the hopes of helping someone else. I would do it again...in a heartbeat!

I've never heard of the migrain symptom, but shoulders and neck is obvious (for a woman lol). Bra straps can be a killer holding large breasts. It's painful. This strains the neck.

I'm afaid to have surgery but wish I wasn't. What makes matters worse is that weight gain ends up in the breast as well. Back when I was 106lbs I had C cups and thought that was a bit too big. HA!

to answer Borgusx, I am not sure, but there is a set of bones across your shoulder/scapula where the bra strap sits and there are a lot of nerves that go up through your neck area from your arms. The pressure, plus the weight from the spine curving forward, causes things to get out of whack. The upper spine has lots of nerves in it also--sort of like the leaning tower of pisa, eventually the gravity takes its toll I guess.

I had a breast reduction in December 2008 and it has helped me in several ways. First of all, I was a 42DD and had neck pain, upper back pain, and rashes under my breasts. Since the surgery, the neck and upper back pain has disappeared (other that the fact that my DH fell on me off a ladder and hurt my neck a month after the surgery,) and I've had no rashes at all. To my surprise, it also seems to have alleviated my gastric reflux and stopped the numbness in my arms and hands. Those are just the physical changes. Mentally, I'm SO much happier not having these cow-like appendages hanging off of me. I'm now a 42C.

Here is a before photo taken in January 2008:

Here's a photo taken in March 2009, 3 months post surgery:

I weighed about the same in each of the photos, perhaps a 5 pounds less in the before photo. I'm VERY happy with the results!!!

I would LOVE to be a DD. I'm 5'10, 250lbs;which is not thin and I would LOVE to lose approx 75 lbs. I have always been very athletic, playing sports in HS and College, but after I had my daughter my breasts never went down. I have dropped two pants sizes and gained three cup sizes!! Now, I'm a 40H. I have to have two mammograms to adequately cover everything and guess what--insurance only pays for one. I am currently going through physical therapy and getting pre-authorization from my insurance. Wish me luck!!

PS: cmacf1--you look GREAT!

I had the reduction, because of the pain in my back, neck, and head. It didnt help the pain go away. The pain is still their everyday. It bothers me with the littlest things I do. Anyone else having this problem?
