Tinnitus can be caused by arthritis of the inner ear bones and by high cholesterol, high blood pressure. Also, the inner ear is sensitive to meds--many meds, especially at high doses are ototoxic. The little hairs inside your ear vibrate when they hear sound. If these little hairs get bent, they can not be repaired. So, you will constantly hear ringing, buzzing, beeping, chirping, or thumping noises.
Get your BP, cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid checked, as well as your inner ear. Eustachian tube dysfunction caused by allergies or infections can also cause this. With Eustachian tube dysfunction you will hear what sounds like flies hitting a light at first. Really weird sound. Antihistimines, Antibiotics will take care of this usually.
Antipsychotics, antidepressants, antianxiety meds are the worst for messing with the inner ear as they change the electrical/chemical makeup in your brain. When doctors prescribe these, they act like your brain isn't connected to the rest of your body and they can just treat the brain without effecting the rest of the body. Doesn't work.

Where did you read or hear this about ADs and Anti-anxiety meds??? Im not
sure theres proof of what you say.
At this second i comment My Ear is killing me on the inside like a throbbing/irritating feeling. I cannot stand this feeling, it might be swimmers ear, Yes? But im not exactly sure because i do not have a " liquidy Feeling " in my ear so anyone.... HELP!
I suffered from all the symptoms that everyone mentioned here. basically something like a butterfly was flapping its wings inside my ear or a tapping sound that for some reason got worst at night and let me sleeplessness with all the consequences that it creates (moodiness, fatigue, difficult concentrating, etc).
I went to an ear specialist and what he told me was that the people that suffer from this is because a body reaction to stress. We do have a little muscle in our inner ear that because the stress is twitching. The little muscles twitch then disturbs the air in the inner ear so close to the auditory system that you feel like a "butterfly is flapping its wings " in there. in my case it got worst at night.
I don't remember the medical term he uses but he basically told me that this is a similar when you have those nervous ticks in your eye (that involuntary movement in your eyelid or face) a nervous twitch.
He prescribed some muscle relaxers and some exercise in order to stretch that little muscle in your ear and stop moving. The muscle relaxer was called Diazepan 5 MG 1-2 tabs per night. and also recommended drinks lots of those sporting drinks rich with potassium the idea is that this is very similar to a muscle cramp but in your ear.
I can't explain that well the exercise he prescribed. what you need to do is basically take your fingers (index and medium) put them softly but firmly (not chocking yourself) at the base of the ear and press the skin firmly down from the base of ear and chin to the middle of your face and hold it for 10-11 seconds. Also put your chin up and try to put you lower jaw has out as it possible count 10 seconds and then put it back to the normal resting position.
He says that this would help to stretch that little muscle in your inner ear that it is creating the disturbance. A stress relief therapy as well like doing some exercise was recommended.

The anti depressant Lexapro is working quite well at lowering the volume of my tinnitus. AND helps me cope with it when it is present(at a lower level) So,ive just proved ya wrong! ITS a brain thing! Read the book "Tinnitus,Turning down the Volume by Kevin Hogan.
So I have no clue where the post I was commenting on went to...... But I am having a throbbing sensation in my ear, there isn't any pain or anything, unless I hear something high pitched.... and it kind feels like there is a gallon of water sitting on my ear drum, a pressure... Any ideas on what to without going to the doctor? Don't have insurance or the money to go to a doctor, but not sure how much longer I can handle this. Doesn't really hurt as much as its driving me crazy.....
Wow, I had no idea so many folks were having the same issue. I just got a DM from someone who wanted to know if I ever fixed the problem. I actually don't remember what happened, but it did go away eventually. I still have horrible decompression issues when descending in an aircraft, but the thumping has never returned for long periods. Occasionally it returns briefly, enough for me to think 'oh jeez, not again' but thankfully it never lasts. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful but to everyone experiencing the same thing, you have my sympathy. I hope you get it fixed asap, it's enough to make you nuts!
