Just Been released from the hospital and was on antibiotics for 2 days. Concern is I will develop C-dif. Has anyone taken a product called Florastor (saccharomyces boulardii) to prevent C-dif from occurring, and if so did it work?

Florastor is expensive and there are lot's of cheaper probiotics out there, but you could probably eat some yogurt instead.

What did the doctor in the hospital suggest? Or did he refer you to a specialist? If he did, then what did the specialist suggest? Or did he refer you back to your PCP? If he did, then what did your PCP suggest?

I would not be overly concerned with a 2 day regimen of antibiotics...or is there something you're not telling us?

It usually takes a LOT longer than two days of antibiotics to get C.diff.

It has obvious symptoms, and there's a reliable test for it; it wouldn't make sense to take meds if you don't know if you've got it.

I've been on strong antibiotics for more than four months straight (inoperable infection), and no C.diff. fingers crossed.

ETA, I just realized this is a probiotic. In fact, I have some right here. Really should read my.labels more often. I retract any objections to it.

I was playing cards last night with a couple, and the husband is a retired gastroenterologist. I asked him about this. He said unlikely but not impossible.

We all carry C. dif in our colons, but in numbers too low to hurt us....When we take antibiotics that can Inhibit the populations of the other bacteria in there, then the C. dif population can grow due to less competition. Then their toxins can be produced in great enough quantity to Injure the colon walls.

Taking probiotics helps increase the population of competing bugs to keep C dif numbers down.
