"...saw the grid test, couldn't see much of it in the center". Definitely go to an ophthalmologist or retinal specialist if you have the insurance or funds. Please do not delay.

Yes, you need to see an ophthalmologist (an actual physician) and not an optometrist (basically a technician). You should ultimately see a retina specialist. I'm sorry to hear you're having this problem! My mother was essentially blind from the wet version. Neither laser treatment (which actually made it worse) or the prescribed vitamins helped her. It's also hereditary; her mother and maternal grandfather both reportedly went blind, and now my sibling is experiencing symptoms.

Speaking of macular degeneration (addressing the other posters now), what in the world is this "geographic atrophy" that Henry Winkler keeps advertising some new medicine for on the radio? The "warning signs" he describes are the symptoms of ARMD (wavy lines, missing central vision, etc.). He claims GA is "an advanced form" or it. Sounds like some made-up disease to peddle some new drug for something that didn't exist yesterday.

if you watch the vid I posted you'll get your answer about geographic atrophy, at about 17:04. it's just a descriptive term used in association of ARMD

Update: It's wet AMD - have an appt. w/the retinal specialist next Thurs. a.m. - I was really hoping for just some eyedrops or something, not a need for eye injections. So depressing - thank you to those that sent good thoughts.

[quote=cheka;66526455]messed up blood sugar causes this. sugar, through glycation, clogs up tiny blood vessels, like those in the eyes, ears, etc

So sorry, but that's not what that article said. That study did not establish a direct causal relationship between high/uncontrolled blood sugar and AMD. It stated that data suggests there may be a correlation. That's a far cry from "messed up blood sugar causes AMD!!!! You've conveniently skipped over a lot of science that needs to be dealt with before a conclusion like that can be reached. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying it isn't possible, that it isn't worth pursuing, or that controlling blood sugar wouldn't help protect your vision. If cause and effect is ever established, that would be a great step forward in preventing and treating the disease.
