Everyone experiences forgetfulness from time to time. You might misplace your wallet, forget to call a loved one on their birthday, or have trouble recalling why you walked into a room—all of which can happen if you're feeling stressed or not getting enough sleep.1
But as you get older, your brain also ages, which increases your risk of having lapses in your memory. If changes in memory are starting to affect your quality of life, you might be experiencing an early warning sign of dementia. Dementia is an umbrella term for neurological (brain-related) conditions that affect memory, thinking, judgment, and the ability to carry out daily tasks.2
Very interesting article. Either applies, or will apply, to most of us as we age
My mother in-law is going through this . Sad. She lives with my BIL and SIL and my SIL takes care of her. She has not gotten to the point of not recognizing anyone but her short term memory is bad. She's not very talkative, she sits a lot in front of TV. Has no motivation to do anything except go to the senor center 2 times a week. Her eating habits aren't great, no matter what amount of food we give her (could be a kids portion) she says Oh lord that's too much. We take her 2 times a month to our house to stay on the weekend to give my SIL a break and she barely ate anything last weekend. She's also stuck on eating shrimp all the time for dinner because she remembers she likes it. She doesn't get shrimp every night though. If we take her out to dinner she asks if they have shrimp on the menu. She has been declining for the last 4 years. She's 84.She can't live alone anymore. It may come to the point where she may have to go into a nursing home but my husband is trying to prevent that if he can.
My wifeof 68 years, ace 85 recebtly passed after maybe five years.
Her first signs were not knowing where to put the pots and pans and came on fast,I was a little snide at firet and had never thought about dement at all,
We had many good years and some bad thru death.
As I now look at her death and that of others her death was merciful. The brain as she was getting ready for bed shut her brathing off and death was instaneous, they tried for awhile in hospiital to know avail, the Emt's tried but said no hope, had a flicker on way to hospital.
