An unusual number of people on the island of Sardinia, Italy live to be 100 years old. It's one of the so-called "Blue Zones" on earth where exceptional longevity is statistically more common. There may be a number of factors in this, which could include genetics - it's kind of an isolated community - and daily activity/exercise. Another aspect could be their diet.

It's certainly a combination of things including living in a hilly environment where people walk and use steps and stairs to move from street to street. People walk to buy fresh groceries daily. It's not a place where people drive everywhere and sit all day. Genetics and diet of course are important factors. Italy in general has one of the oldest populations in the world and young people stay fit and active. Notice, this is not a low carb type of area. Moderate carbs including eating fresh baked bread and pasta with little red meat and the use of olive oil in everyday life is a winning combination.

Should work great if you're at least 98.5.

Good health is important, but...do you really want to live to 100? I'm half that and am already pretty tired of this ride. Another 50+ years doesn't strike me as any sort of aspirational goal.

Yea, it would be different if we were adding those extra years early in life, but we're not. We'd be adding them on at the end when someone else is cashing our SS check for us.

Longevity is ultimately determined by genetics-- You can't live longer than your genes will allow, no matter what you do....You can shorten your life by unwise lifestyle choices. These "studies" always seem to undeservedly emphasize the diet component and usually ignore the genetic component.

It's not what you eat, it's how much you eat that counts. The common factor in the Mediterranean Diet and the Sardinian Diet is that both are very low calorie compared to what Americans are used to. Obesity is a fairly rare thing in Italy.

For me those standards are more for proper dieting than longevity.

I ate crap for many many years (ie teenager diet). That diet impacted my health and my sleep because of "severe" stomach issues. It's silly now, but at the time, I could not break that stupidity of eating crap and stomach pain. Then about 10 years ago I changed my diet (in my 40s). The diet change was almost an immediate impact to my body with no stomach pain...most important, I was sleeping really really good.

I adhere to some of those standards because why complicate my life with a stupid diet...no more teenager diet. I might not live until 100, but at least I am not in pain and I can sleep!

50 is way too early to be feeling down like that have you looked into it?

My grandmother lived to 103 so my goal is to stay healthy and strong as long as possible. I want to be the old lady walking the beach and then dancing at my great grandkids' weddings.

I believe things about the Blue Zones started to fall apart when it was researched more.
