I recently saw my doctor and asked him if he gets any complaints from his patients having brain fog from taking statins, he said no. I told him since taking a higher dosing of Rosuvastatin, my thinking has been less sharp and seems similar to the brain fog complaints that I hear from some people taking statins. Has anyone in this forum experienced brain fog or memory problems while taking statins?

VERY common and grossly under-reported in the med lit...It tends to be subtle so many pts don't complain but will admit to it when specifically asked--> but the question isn't on the computer program the docs are staring at and checking off boxes while you're in the office, so they don't ask.

Maybe related -- when I was taking rosuvastatin I had several falls going down steps and would trip over my own toes. Stopped the drug and now back to being steady on my feet.

From what I have read, brain-fog/decreased mental-functioning is not an uncommon thing to happen to some who take statins.

Keeping cholesterol low, especially in older patients, is a very bad idea.

Just checked Epocraties and Medscape and both list fogginess as an exceptionally small percentage of patients under very rare circumstances

What? That's nonsense. High cholesterol kills people, it's as important to keep it down as it is w/ blood pressure, another leading cause of strokes and heart attacks in older people. That's very, very clear.

I was hesitant to take Rosuvastatin myself because I have tinnitus, and the other statins had a lot of evidence that it could make it worse, or even cause it. There are also a lot of complaints about muscle soreness w/ statins. But after 2 months on it I feel fine, no brain fog or other side effects. However, this could be an issue w/ a small percentage of people. Anyone on statins should make sure that they're taking the minimal amount required to do the job, which means getting labs done on a regular basis.

This is a dosage critical medication. I had a lot of diarrhea at the 10mg dosage lever, but at 5mg things are OK. People w/ cholesterol issues need to clean up their diets and exercise too! You can't expect a medication to address this if you eat all the wrong things and never exercise. I live in a senior community and its shocking how many people ignore this. Their health either regularly deteriorates, or they end up dying or waiting to die in assisted living from strokes and heart attacks.

But you know what they say, there's no fool like an old fool. Eating a crappy diet and sitting in front of a TV all day, which I see here all the time, will quickly make you a dead fool.
