Hi,
Doctor wants me to get an upper GI to see why I am having trouble (sometimes) swallowing. Little nervous to get it done. Anyone else have the same issue? What did it end up being?
It feels like the food just sits there for a minute and then after it stops hurting I can take a drink of water and actually feel it go down my throat.
More pressure than pain.
Thank you.

Probably should go see an ENT. They can do a nasal endoscopy right in the office. That goes to the voice box and can rule out anything above that.

I had the issue last year. I didn't have an upper GI because I didn't trust the doctor to go in there while I was out cold. And frankly I didn't have a ride. I went to an ENT and she suggested a Transnasal endoscopy. (different than the nasal endoscopy) They put a small cable up your nose and down your throat. The cable goes past your voice box and down into your esophagus. You actually get to watch on a video camera. Video

The advantages is that it can be done asap. And you don't need to be put out. Usually with an ENT doctor. I had it done just in an office. Didn't need anyone to drive me home. Disadvantage is that it doesn't go into the stomach.

Personally I didn't find the transnasal endosocopy too bad and I was fine in about 5 hours.

Mine turned out to be nothing but I always told my doctors I didn't feel like I was having trouble swallowing as much as I had lost coordination in swallowing. I simply think it is due to menopause / lack of saliva. They were looking for something physically stopping swallowing so I decided not to persue it further.

Dad had one where they stretched his esophagus, making it easier to swallow. He was under anesthesia. No big deal.

I've known several people who had swallowing difficulties at different times. The underlying cause was different for each of them. An upper GI is a pretty standard diagnostic tool that can rule out a number of things. Some reading might help OP:

Well...it can be a big deal when the tissue in the esophogus tears during the procedure.

My own personal issue with swallowing a few years back were very large thyroid nodules, and half my thyroid was removed.

I had a barium swallow first and it revealed that I had esophageal strictures that caused severe narrowing of my esophagus. I subsequently had an upper GI to evaluate for malignancy. So far no displasia or malignancy.

My symptoms were somewhat different in that I couldn't get certain foods down. I do periodically get dilations for the strictures. Since my strictures are high in my esophagus, I initially thought the problem was in my throat but an ENT explained to me that because the muscles of esophagus push the food down through peristalsis, the strictures were causing the food to back up into my throat.
