Lately, perhaps since couple of months, i've noticed that sometimes occasionally (perhaps once every 4-6 hours but sometimes even longer) I can get a bit of a burst in the side of my right eye. It's difficult to describe but it feels like a extremely quick dark burst at the very periphery of the eye, feels like a flash but it's not bright, more like a dark flash. This can of course be quite alarming. I have no other health issues - I am NOT diabetic.

Going to get the eye checked out but wondering if anyone has had any similar symptoms. From what I am reading online this could be aging related PVD (Posterior vitreous detachment). Just speculating of course:

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/healt...ous-detachment

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) occurs when the gel that fills the eyeball separates from the retina. It’s a natural, normal part of aging. PVD can cause floaters or flashes in your sight, which usually become less noticeable over time. The condition isn’t painful, and it doesn’t cause vision loss on its own. But you should see an eye specialist to make sure you don’t have another problem, such as a retinal tear.

If you are highly nearsighted, you are at a greater risk for a retinal detachment, so be sure to follow up
More minor note ocular migraines can also cause that

Def get that checked ASAP.

I feel like anything with the eyes its best to be very quick to get it checked.

I had something similar last year. Turned out to be a retina tear. Had emergency laser surgery. Had to lie on my side for two weeks; was absolute hell.

I noticed some peripheral flashes (most noticeable if I rolled my eye in a different direction or in a dark room) and I also noticed a couple of floaters in the same general quadrant of my visual field. No other symptoms, vision was fine. Had my eye doc check it out the next day. He explained about age related posterior vitreous detachments and how little wrinkles resulting from detachments appear as floaters. My retina was fine. Both symptoms subsided over the next few days. If this happens again, I'll certainly get it checked out just to be sure I'm not ignoring something more serious like a retinal tear.

Went to the eye doc, he did a retinal scan and the image showed no issues. I asked about dilation and they said it is done only if problems show in the image.

However, now I am reading that if the doc did not do a dilated test then it isn't a thorough exam... well, looks like I have to get it done all over again then. yikes!

Was that with an ophthalmologist or an O.D.? I would get it checked out by an ophthalmologist.

Said she had the retinal scan. She is fine with the optometrist.
Many optometrist, now do more medical than just refractions

The the OP said "burst in the side of the eye" and it sounds like they got an Optomap exam. The Optomap has an issue with the peripheral view.

https://holisticvisioncare.wordpress...etina-imaging/

"1) Optos does not capture the true image of the Retina and 2) Optos does not capture 100% view of the peripheral retina to detect retinal tears that can lead to potential retinal detachments! As such, it is no substitute for a dilated exam!"

"We recently saw a patient who, when at another optometrist had an Optos test. The doctor said the results came out fine. The dilated retinal exam, with Dr Desai, revealed she had thinning of the retina that could lead to a retinal detachment, and she was sent to a retinal specialist for laser treatment! For this reason and many more we do not recommend the Optos test."

"The Optos never could see the far retinal periphery so it failed as a tool to replace dilation."

I would definitely get it checked by an ophthalmologist.
