Sounds like you should be screened for depression IMO.

I can’t sleep. Period. I am old, so I don’t give a crap about “addiction”, I just need to sleep. In my state, good luck with getting Xanax or other benzodiazepines or hypnotics as the opioid/meth/fentanyl zombies have ruined it for everyone else, at least I am told that. Stuff like trazodone just make me dizzy, it & Elavil are early generation antidepressants that didn’t do the job that current SSRIs are supposed to do & are now prescribed off-label for insomnia, which is ridiculous. Melatonin, magnesium, etc. are useless for sleep. Marijuana is legal in my state, but I don’t want to get high, I want to sleep. I bought CBD oil in Colorado in a legit shop & it was a waste of money. I have no idea what Delta 8 is. Some people in these forums boast about their mj brownies & when I ask about dosage..crickets. Good lord, I am not a narc. Screw it, I’ll bust out the vodka.

Actually, Elavil and other tricyclic antidepressants worked just fine -- much better than SSRIs seem to -- for depression, but were shelved because they caused unpleasant side effects like dry mouth and weight gain and, more importantly, were available in generic form and therefore were not profitable for Big Pharma. Now prescribed in smaller doses, they seem to also work just fine for insomnia. You can also still get them for depression, but have to ask for them, because...no commercials on TV or free samples (with kickbacks) being handed out to doctors!

I hear ya LKJ. However, I have a yorkie that I adore and would miss me terribly if I never woke back up. So for now, I'm happy to enjoy my sleep routine and nap time.

The pills ran out last Oct. My sister had a bunch when she passed away in Sept of 2019. They lasted a long time since i only take one piece on a Sat and another on a Sun.

My other Doc would not give me any. I gotta go to Walgreens and get em Sun. Ever since i stopped smoking my sleep went to hell as i am way too wired up and wound up and feel like i am gonna blow up all the time. Only time i really get tired is around 830pm and crash and burn around 915pm and go right to sleep and wake up around 2 or 3am all amped up and ready to go.

Should have never stopped smoking as it ruined me.

You mean never should have started as it ruined you.

How do you cut a Xanax (or any pill) into three pieces? I halve and then quarter them.

You can buy a pill cutter.

Also, tricyclic antidepressants were not effective for depression, and for some people, like me, they just cause dizziness & other unpleasant side effects & do not aid with sleep. I don’t need to fall down between my bed & the bathroom. I do agree that they continue to make $$$ for big pharma.

I'm aware of that -- and use one. My point was, a round or oval pill doesn't lend itself to division by thirds.

In a pill cutter, totally possible.

I took melatonin for years, but, even though I took an expensive time released form of it I would wake up severely groggy most of the time (kind of a melatonin hangover). Obviously, if you can exercise enough that can be one of the best cures for insomnia. If you have issues that mean you cannot exercise too vigorously I have also realized that getting a really good brain workout is a good substitution. You have to work on something very difficult like writing a research paper (or a researched paper). So, it really is idleness that causes insomnia (for me). However, there are times when I am just anxious (because I have to chop wood and carry water (generally deal with the more mundane aspects of life)). I cannot always set myself for good sleep and instead do the opposite.

I have found that taking Magnesium Glycinate has helped my sleep.

People do not realize what is making them not sleep. You cannot fall asleep? Or, you wake up for the bathroom. You wake up because you are cold (have not put the extra blanket on yet?). Do you wake up to hot (not using the air conditioner in the warmer months). Do you wake up because you are in pain. You wake up with indigestion? Do you wake up because you are not breathing correctly. There is so much that goes into sleep maintenance. It can take a long time to figure it all out. Why am I up now? I forced myself to sleep in until 10 a.m. I'm heading to bed now...
