I keep hearing/seeing all these commercials like "I took prescription opioids for a week and now I'm addicted".

First, are the commercials just hype? Or are some people really that sensitive to the meds that they really can addicted that easily?

I've taken prescription opioids multiple times after various surgeries and never had any issues (not counting constipation). There's nothing special about me, so are there risk factors that make you mor susceptible to getting addicted?

Opioid Use Disorder

Quote:
It is not yet known why some people become addicted to opioids and others do not. Typically, opioids produce pain relief and, for some people, euphoria ― a sense of heightened well-being. Experiencing euphoria after taking opioids may be a warning sign of vulnerability to opioid addiction. This euphoria can even occur in people using opioids as prescribed by their doctor.

I took Oxycodone after cancer surgery on my tongue. I was on a liquid diet for a week and the two combine to give me unbelievable constipation after I went back to solid food. I'm afraid to ever take any opioids again.

Same here. They may have reduced pain but I didn't notice any kind of high. My brother has had the same experience after several surgeries.

It's pure nonsense and lies. If they stopped after a week, they wouldn't have become addicted. It's that simple. Nobody is addicted after only a week. Physiologically impossible. The problem is that they kept taking them long after the week was up, and kept on taking them until they were addicted.

I used to think that addiction was purely a chemical thing.

But, lately, I have read a few articles talking about socializing, and how we interact with people determines whether we become addicted, or not.

The latest was a story about giving mice two water bottles, one with cocaine, and one without. If a mouse lives by itself it will decide to only drink from the cocaine bottle and become addicted. If the mouse lives in a community of mice, it will ignore the cocaine bottle.

What cocaine addiction provides is something that is normally provided by being within a community.

Which kind of implies that there is something about socializing that can make an individual immune to addiction.

Reason-A: Some things are more addictive than others.....opioids can very addictive.

Reason-B: Some people do not have a lot of sense and/or honesty with regards to Reason-A.

Reason-C: Opioids, for many people, are very fun......and for that reason, some people will use them too
much and/or too long, putting themselves very much at risk for becoming physically
and/or mentally dependant on them.

Curious about your statement that opioids are "very fun." Would love to hear how they're so "fun."

When I've taken opioids after surgery or root canal, I have a brief period of feeling that all is right with the world, in addition to having my pain halted. Not a rushing high or anything but I can see why people keep taking them without needing them for pain.
