I had one yesterday and the doctor tells me I will not have to have another one.
I have had polyps removed over the years, but they never amounted to anything. Nothing more than warts, so to speak. When he removed them he tattooed the spot so he would know if he was removing the same one over and over.
I think I have had 3. Maybe 4. Got the first on when I was 68.
I will be 78 this summer. Health and weight good, exercise regularly and so forth. If I behave myself and stay lucky I will live another 15 years or so.
They generally don't like to give colonoscopies to patients over 70, if that patient checks all clear.

My Dad had to have a section of his colon removed at 88 years old. I would still have the test every 5 years.

Is that what your dad did? And did he have a history of polyps and so forth?

The growth and mutation of colonpolyps into canceris a slow process, taking an estimated 10 years on average and I don't have any.

.
That reminds me of the joke about the patient who got so depressed because the doc told him he'd have to take this new prescription for the rest of his life-- then only gave him ten pills.

Seriously tho-- at your age, no new polyp will have time to grow big enough to obstruct or turn cancerous before old age does you in. You can coast on in to the finish line now. I guess that's good?

If you have it running in your family, the testing protocol is different, I believe. The "stop at 70" is for people who have never had any bad results from previous tests.

Exactly. Those with no bad results, and no family history. DH's uncle died from colon cancer, so DH got his first one at 35, and then every 5 years. Now it's every 2 years because there are new polyps every single time he gets a test. The last time one of the polyps was fairly large after having only 2 years to "sprout" and grow, so he'll be getting them until he dies, I expect. I'm still on the every 10 year plan, and I'll get them until I'm so old that I figure I'll die of something else first. Personally I don't get all the dread and drama around the test. A few hours of diarrhea vs death or colostomy bag? I'll take "the runs" please.

Reminds me of the comments the oncologist I see made some time ago when we were talking about the topic of older people choosing to opt in or out of cancer treatments, relative to being so old they weren't going to live very long either way. The question? "Who wants to live to be 100 years old? Answer "the 99 year old man".
