I never used reddit myself for that very reason, until recently, but as with most rules there are exceptions. The gout subreddit is one of those. There are many people there who know more about gout, having learned the hard way, than most GPs know about it. Its a very knowledgeable and supportive group. I learned more in my first week there than I did from many hours of scouring the web every time I had a flare, most of which just regurgitated the same (often simplified, outdated or just plain wrong) info over and over. Today a very experienced rheumatologist answered numerous questions from r/gout participants.
There are some other good ones too, unfortunately surrounded by many cesspools. Like the one linked above.
