The original reference and context was to seek medical professionals for medical opinions. We need to get back to that. If 9 out of 10 doctors agree with a diagnosis and one doctor has a weird diagnosis you go along with the consensus if you are smart. One isn't trying to be original or innovative with a diagnosis. Originality is not what one is trying to achieve.
I also find it disingenuous in not accepting the originality of the person who invented the mRNA vaccine which was the first and innovative. By your definition the creator of the mRNA is a great scientist. They broke away from the past in the way it was produced. You do not accept the vaccine because it broke away from the consensus view on how to make vaccines. Now you are telling me and extolling that consensus in science is irrelevant. The producer of the mRNA is a great scientist and should get the Nobel Prize because of the innovation and the acceptance (consensus) in its use.
The practice of medicine changed from experienced based to evidence based. It is based on a consensus on how to practice medicine and provide a standard of care. Experienced based medicine with authoritative based practices are being eliminated. It's not based on who you are but on what you can prove. The way you prove anything is by showing consistency in clinical trials in order to build a consensus that something works. After many trials a meta-analysis provides a consensus view on how well something works.
