I personally know several heavy smokers that smoke 5+ times per day.
You answered your own question. Not all marijuana users are heavy smokers. People who are stoned all day ARE probably going to have money problems, relationship issues, etc., BECAUSE THEY ARE ALWAYS STONED.
Many marijuana smokers enjoy it in an evening after work or on a weekend with friends, etc.
Maybe you need to ask yourself why these are the types of people you hang out with. I partake, and I know a number of intelligent, well-employed, responsible people who do, but I don't know any smokers who hide at home so they can smoke or smoke all day long to the point where they can't handle money or are too stoned to maintain a relationship. I HAVE known people like that in the distant past, but they tend to get left by the wayside in life because they can't really function and don't progress.
It's no different from people who overuse any substance.
For example, one of the heavy users I know is a woman that smokes probably 7+ times per day (call it $40/day). Almost anyone would meet her and think she’s a well adjusted/pleasant person. She works full time and doesn’t look like a bum. But those that don’t know her wouldn’t know that she has zero savings, zero retirement, frequently needs to borrow money to pay bills, house is a nasty mess, relationship problems, only spends time with other heavy smokers, etc. She even thinks of herself as a well adjusted person! From an outsider’s perspective it’s like — WAKE UP life is passing you by.
Meh...this is probably correlation more than causation. Her smoking addiction/habit probably keeps her from feeling the effects of her pre-existing awful life choices.
That said, quitting weed would almost certainly be a net-positive in her life.
Well, despite its negative effects it certainly shouldn't be a criminal offense. So you may need to bring your attitude into the 21st century, juuust a bit.
Well, you and I will disagree for sure.
I see what drugs does to people lives every day. Not some hypothetical discussion on a gun forum. Legalizing drugs brings about all sorts of other issues - but the media usually overlooks those things.
Does something need to change? Probably. But honestly - no matter what changes to the laws happens, there will always be drug use. Ain't no stopping it. But making it legal is not the answer IMHO.
And as I stated in my 1st post - I do not want anything to do with a drug user in my own personal life.
Alcohol does similar long term damage pot does, even if in different ways. Current users of both substances are in denial of this and the change is slow enough they don't notice, until it causes a problem for them. I know people who screwed up their lives abusing both. I see nothing glamorous in either, but I still drink occasionally.
Well, most marijuana users aren't addicted. There's no physical addiction, no withdrawal. Even people who smoke daily can take a few days off and they aren't going to suffer. It's not like heroin or alcohol in that regard, which can cause serious physical withdrawal symptoms.
There is a potential for psychological addiction if a person is relying on smoking to deal with some emotional issue.

I’m not above “hanging out” with someone I know smokes a lot — not my money, health, etc.
And yes — people can overuse any substance — or heck even working out. The thing is — substances that are all about making one feel good/better are ripe for abuse for a certain percentage of people. And a lot of the hype surrounding marijuana makes it seem like a perfectly harmless drug. Too a lesser degree it’s sorta like ex-alcoholics that complain about being bombarded with messages/pressure to drink and have fun.

Reason: I left out a word in the quoted post

That's certainly your perogative, and I won't have drug addicts or abusers in my life.
But would you not have anything to do with someone who owns and runs a manufacturing business with customers around the world, including restaurants you have eaten at and maybe eat at regularly? How about full-time university employees with graduate degrees, or the guy I grew up with who graduated law school? You probably already have people like that in your personal life, like I do (in the first two cases;I'd rather be alone than with a lawyer lol), and they just keep their mouth shut about it around you whereas they know I don't give a care as long as they keep their s*** together. I think you've probably been exposed to the criminal side so much you don't realize that very normal law abiding people use it too.
But I don't want to go too far in my defense either, I've seen it hurt a lot of people who abused it, including myself and I think a lot of hype around it today goes too far.

Ah, the mental clarity strain. That's a strain I haven't tried.
