Reading more entries and the word "need" comes up a lot by members from their doctors. They need cataract surgery, they need knee replacement, etc etc etc.
I keep my eyes going fine and no need for surgery and working to keep knee working without surgery.
Emergency issues are another story.
We can do so much to stay away from the surgeries, which are major traumas to our bodies.
Doctors... I work in Health Care and Docs vary as do people...
Some are real SOB but are the best in their field... really the best and they let everyone know...
Others are looking at mountains of student debt and trying to build their practice...
Some should have retired but are still practicing... I guess practice makes perfect.
Then there are some truly genuine Docs with good skills... both medical and people... they really do care about you as the whole person.
One of the Docs I know has a family business... he sees anyone without regard to insurance or payment... his specific instructions as he does not want it to cloud his medical judgement... not many like him left and his office is staffed only by family... his mother in law, wife and daughter with IT done by his son...
I work in a Hospital and specialist was too busy to see Mom for two weeks... I mentioned this to Doc with the family practice and he said I would not wait that long... how soon can you have her here... I said 45 minutes... turns out it was a real problem that only would have become worse...
I know there is a business side and professional side... many focus only on business... high volume... coding, move them in and out... such is the norm.

Being in my 8th decade of life, I've seen both sides of all this technology. And see the capitalistic ways of the U.S. and do miss a lot of my early life. But my mind remembers it all. Coming from being born at home to whatever it costs to bring a baby into the world in hospitals today, 9 months of ultrasounds, not in my days. I can't imagine. Thousands. I've digressed as I do.

All my uncles and aunts were born at home at the family farm...
Being that I work in a hospital I have seen some really amazing results when it comes to eye procedures... life changing whether it is being able to drive again or leave assisted living due to sight problems...
Many procedures that required lengthy hospital stays are now done outpatient... also not nearly as many sick people in outpatient because if your are sick the procedure will be cancelled...

thank you for your post, ultra. your bolded point was partially my reason for making the original post, "move them in and out" is the norm. another new norm, in my experience, is for doctors to suggest as many tests or procedures as possible, new expensive ones have been particularly suggested recently, whether these tests or procedures are needed or not or will impact treatment or not.
I also agree with you that there are some genuinely wonderful providers. I've been lucky enough to have them in the past. the other reason for my original post, as my post lamented, is I haven't found "genuine docs with good skills" in a decade, even with trying.

My eyes are in good condition for the condition I'm in....I've said many times I do all I can to Heal Thyself and thank goodness for the world of nutritional supplements out there. I started with books and then when I finally bought into a home computer, and it's all online, have slowly thrown all the years of books away. Our throw away society.
I've had some negative outcomes with drugs and surgery and so has a loved one, so the tastes in my mouth and mind are there...I prefer no cutting.
I've posted about a great D.O. I started seeing in my 30's and he worked into his early 90's and never computerized his office. He knew so much and helped me so much get thru my life with a problem OA back. He fixed my thyroid with no labs, this older MD/DO knew. He was one of a kind, at least that I knew. There were probably many like him.

Hate to say this but the value of having someone on the inside can be huge...
If you need a surgeon... it pays to ask the surgical nurses who they would see... same for other specialties...
A couple of years back Mom had a bout of debilitation pain... her GP sent her for an MRI...
Just by happenstance I was in the hospital locker room and one of the Docs asked how mom was doing... I said not so good... she is immobilized from pain and had an MRI done yesterday... he asked where and said he would like to help.
He called his office and said I need images for patient xyz… he had them in 15 minutes... said he can help and said have mom here at 6 am tomorrow if she is open to it...
The block helped immensely…
The kicker is 4 days later the GP called and said he has reviewed the results and is referring to a specialist... I said thank you and the specialist has already seen and treated Mom 3 days ago and she is doing much better...
When it counts it is nice to be able to cut though all the noise to solve problems... mom was not even on the surgery schedule but Doc called in and said to add her and he would make it up during his cases for the day...
Individuals often are left to luck of the draw or network...

Thanks..I live with complications from a hip surgery going on 9 yrs ago. And had high recommendations on the surgeon.
We all choose our paths. And who knows maybe I might need a surgeon again before it's all over, hope not.

Some have had the procedure twice due to medical recall...
My great aunt had it at 85... she was a quiet sweet widow but said the pain was becoming a problem and it was totally her decision...
She had the hip surgery and it was a long but very successful recovery... she had 8 good years after she healed... lived alone in the same apartment for 40 years but had many, many friends...
Any surgical procedure comes with risk... and I think many forget this.
