This summer I noticed that my hand, mostly my right, would get tingly and number once in a while. Like when driving the car, or at night in bed.
Well its getting quite a bit worse. I moved this summer and saw a new Dr for a physical a few months ago and mentioned it. She wanted to know if it was mostly my thumb, index middle finger or the other two fingers. I wasn't sure. So I've been paying attention and its mostly the thumb, index, middle.
It does happen in bed so it might be sleeping position there. But it also happens at other times, I associate it with pressure, pressure of holding the steering wheel or.......daily life.
As of last night, this morning. Last night I had the worst by far. Normally I can shift position and shake my arm and it decreases. Last night it didn't "release" till I got up and walked around. And this mornign my fingers still feel a little funny.
Any thoughts to explore on this? 15 minutes with a Dr. isn't enough to not go in there with some ideas because I have other things to talk about too. Called yesterday for an appt and its a month out.
Brought my DH to emergency room a couple of months back. He was having tingling and numbness in his hand and arm. They did an EKG, right away. It was normal. Doctor asked him if he rests his arm on the arm of a couch, or on arm rest while driving. Yes. That was the culprit. Nerves were being compressed.
Carpal tunnel syndrome if it involves the thumb side of the hand. Cubital tunnel syndrome, affects the two outer fingers. I get the latter when I have my arm on the car armrest for long periods of time, and even in the dentist's chair (similar armrests). I wear splints at night to help with carpal. Years of doing handcrafts and cutting wood by hand.
For me it happens a lot of sleeping hours when hands get bent in one way. I've had OA in my right thumb for probably 30 yrs and it's not reversed as I've aged. I can handle what I get, just shake out my hands...and try to be aware of how I sleep and don't bend my hands. I avoid surgeries. A couple were too much in my life.
I think it's a muscle habit. Even if it is carpal tunnel, muscles could be the cause I think. We easily get into bad habits with how we sit, stand, move, unfortunately.
Doing yoga every day helps a lot. Also being aware of your muscles, instead of just letting everything happen automatically.
I have read about Alexander technique, but never took any classes. I think it makes a lot of sense as one way to become more aware and prevent all these very common problems.
But there are lots of different approaches to preventing and fixing bad muscle habits.
