I have the same problem with pain beginning in back of my neck radiating up into my head. I tried a chiropractor and he made it worse in the long run!! Some slow gentle stretching exercises do help me but it always comes back. I will be honest when I say that my relief comes from herbal medicine- If you know what I mean- It really really helps along with the gentle stretching exercises that I got from a physical therapist. Life is too short to live like this! When all else fails- go to the natural remedy!!!

A few days ago out of nowhere, terrible pain began in my neck with pain radiating up the left side of my head. It has been so severe, it awakens me at night. I can't drive because I can't turn my head. It is making my life miserable. I too have had both knees replaced, disk surgery, both shoulders repaired and both carpal tunnels released. My doctor thought I had rheumatoid arthritis, but I tested negative. I haven't gone to the doctor because it is just more of the same. I am a 66 year old female. I am very busy and somewhat active. If it continues, I will have to go to see someone. I dread more x-ray and tests. Any suggestions?

I'm a bit surprised that your GP didn't refer you to a specialist such as an audiologist or otologist to confirm that the pain is or is not because of your ear problems. You also didn't mention if your GP ordered up the MRIs and CTScans etc. - if not then he/she is lacking a tool to "see" inside. If I was in your shoes I would probably consult with a good chiropractor, too.

I have the same pain as the OP described and my doctor took x-rays and it showed that I had severe arthritis in my neck and all the way down the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae joints. I take Tylenol for arthritis as needed and it helps tremendously. The doc also recommended neck exercises such as moving left to right plus moving the head around and around. When I do this I can feel the bones crunching and that is the arthritis he said.

Just happened to be reading this .. I also have osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis and bulging in my neck .... I experienced the kind of pain described back in 2004 ... lasted for about a month ... too old to remember what 'fixed' it ... but it came back about 6 months ago ... I went to the same doctor and she finally told me that the pain was caused by muscle spasms in my neck due to the arthritis and prescribed vallium to relax the muscles ... (I also take vicodin for pain) ....it worked! ... I also do the neck exercises (and hear the crunching ) .... but if I even get a hint that my head pain is coming back I take the vallium ... (I only take these before bed time - they both knock me out totally) ... ps - be carefull about moving your head 'around and around' ... mine told me to move head side to side, left to right ... back to front ... but all very slowly ... you don't want to make things worse .... good luck!

I'm another one with the arthritis in the neck, and a lot of other places. Also have degenerating discs. I can relate to the crunching sound. Like fingers scraping against a chalkboard-creepy!!
